Betel Nut Sales Girls
I found these photos of betel nut sales girls in Taiwan on another forum. Is it OK to mention the name of the forum, or would the moderators object to advertising a competitor? According to an article in Asia Times Online;
"….Drivers, especially truck drivers - many of whom are addicted to the mild stimulation the nut provides - will stop to buy the nuts. When they do the girls totter out of their booth on the highest of heels in the shortest of micro-minis and a bikini top to conduct the transaction. Or at least they used to. Because such is the competition to sell the nuts among what is estimated to be 100,000 vending outlets around the island that some of the girls have all but dispensed with clothes altogether. First it was flesh-colored see-through tops with no bras. Then the microskirts went see-through too. Then briefs started to be replaced by thongs, and now among the keener vendors even the thongs have gone. … …One Taoyuan betel-nut beauty was fined last week. When she asked why, she was told it was because the see-through skirt she wore showed her pubic hair. Determined not to let this happen again, she went home, shaved the offending hair off and went back to work in the same skirt. She was outraged and protested vehemently when she was fined for indecency a second time. "

" I read that some of the betel nuts are grown illegally on natural preserve hillsides, and some of the sales outlets are technically illegal either because they violate public indecency ordinances, or because they do not have the proper license to operate a business. It can be dangerous to get caught photographing the girls at betel nut sales outlets operated by criminals. I would love to see more photos, and hopefully better quality photos, if you get a chance to take any while you are in Taiwan. But I wanted to let you know to be very careful not to get caught taking photos unless you know it is safe.

These, while regrettably small, are the most explicit I found; there is, though, a flickr group devoted to the subject, and with over 1000 pictures I haven't gotten through them all yet: http://www.flickr.com/groups/betelnut_beauties/pool/ . As with the PNW story of "bikini baristas," there are claims of more revealing images out there somewhere, but given that the subjects are as notoriously camera-shy as Amsterdam's women offering themselves at windows...
