It is a great photo, i'm not sure that removing the blank out is a good idea though, we get a lot of anonymous posters here who may get scared off if they new that the blank outs could be removed.

I thought only a somewhat transparent block could be removed, even if it was only 5% transparent. Can solid color blocks be removed also?

You are correct. Solid ones can't be punched through, unless there is another source (like the thumbnail) that is not covered.
