Pantyhose were discovered by Allen Gant Senior and its first version appeared in 1959. Pantyhose are a combination of stockings and underpants. Needless to say, pantyhose emphasize the attractiveness of a woman. It makes legs look smooth, silky and extremely sexy. On the more human side, pantyhose make it easier to wear and take off shoes. It lends slenderness and shine to an otherwise blemished skin. During winter, pantyhose provide much needed warmth and coziness. The uniform pressure applied on all parts of the leg enhances blood circulation too.

Uses of pantyhose:
The uses of pantyhose are manifold. New pantyhose serve the purpose of giving confidence in the mind of the user. They make the wearer look alluring and seductive. They also provide warmth and comfort. But the utility of old pantyhose can be mind-boggling! Old pantyhose can be used to clean up a fish-tank or a garden pond. A debris-skimmer can be created by folding a clothes hanger into a circle and covering it with pantyhose. All the debris can then be removed like magic! Pantyhose are priceless as far as kitchen utility is concerned. They serve as wonderful scrubbers for utensils, especially non-stick ones. Pantyhose can be rolled into a ball to serve as a floor shiner. Wet flour can be prevented from sticking onto a rolling pin by covering it with a tube of pantyhose. A garbage liner can be secured with the help of the elastic band of the pantyhose. A garden cannot do without pantyhose as well. Ripe onions and potatoes can be stored and tomato vines can be secured with pantyhose. Flower bulbs can be stored in the same way. Pots can be lined with pantyhose before being filled with mud and planted with houseplants. This will prevent the soil from being washed away. A wonderful loofah can be crafted out of pantyhose by just cutting off the legs, filling the remainder with left-behind pieces of soap and then tying the ends. It can be placed beside the sink to wash hands regularly. The best use of old pantyhose is perhaps to ferret out lost objects from the carpet. A leg from old pantyhose can be cut out and tied around the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner. In no time the lost object will be found sticking to the pantyhose in the nozzle! Mothballs can be kept inside pantyhose to protect clothes in a closet. A similar variation can be done by using scent instead of mothballs. |

Pantyhose (also known as tights) are close fitting coverings of the body from the waist to the feet, most frequently worn by women. Like stockings they are usually made of nylon. The one-piece pantyhose garment appeared in the 1960s and provided a convenient alternative to stockings. The term 'pantyhose' originated in the United States, referring to the combination of 'panties' (an American term for women's underpants) with sheer nylon hosiery. In the United Kingdom, they are called tights, a term that refers to all such garments regardless of thickness. In the U.S., the term tights is used for non-sheer garments similar to pantyhose, such as those worn by girls, dancers, and athletes.

The hosiery industry currently produces almost 2 billion pairs of women's sheer hose annually. Industry analysts predict that consumers will continue to demand high-quality nylons in a variety of shades, styles, and degrees of sheerness. Manufacturers will strive to meet the consumer's need by experimenting with hybrid fabrics that combine synthetic fibers with natural fibers such as cotton.

Starting sometime in the 90s, pantyhose went almost completely out of fashion[citation needed] in the female market but began to rise in the lesser known (not talked about) male market. Until recently, women, in general no longer wore pantyhose unless it was mandated by dress code, typically found at corporate companies and executive level[citation needed]. An exception to this was the wearing of special pantyhose such as fishnet or various pattern types, but this was a rather rare occurrence.
However, in the mid-to-late '00s of this century, pantyhose have been appearing once again in fashion and in public, indicating the recurring cycle of couture once again bringing the leg covering back into vogue, especially in the form of thicker, dark tights and shades of black pantyhose. Pantyhose have even made a return to Paris runways and Haute Couture as indicated by many premier designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier's Fall/Winter 2006 |

Pantyhose are also increasingly unfashionable. Since 1995 pantyhose sales have declined by about 70 percent, though there are more women in the workplace than at any time in history, and despite the fact that an increasing number of men are purchasing and wearing pantyhose.

The first year on the market, DuPont sold 64 million pairs of stockings. That same year, nylon appeared in the movie, The Wizard of Oz, where it was used to create the tornado that carried Dorothy to the Emerald City.
In 1942, nylon went to war in the form of parachutes and tents. Nylon stockings were the favorite gift of American soldiers to impress British women. Nylon stockings were scarce in America until the end of World War II, but then returned with a vengeance. Shoppers crowded stores, and one San Francisco store was forced to halt stocking sales when it was mobbed by 10,000 anxious shoppers. |

Julie Newmar, a living Hollywood film and television legend is an inventor in her own right. The former Cat Woman patented ultra-sheer, ultra-snug pantyhose. Known for her work in films such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Slaves of Babylon, Newmar has also appeared recently in Fox Television’s Melrose Place and the hit feature-film "To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Love Julie Newmar."

On May 15th, 1940, Nylons were sold to the general public and nylon hosiery became a huge success as women lined up at stores across the United States to obtain the precious goods. Four Million Pairs of Nylons were sold in the first few days. It was called the New Miracle Fiber. Women everywhere were highly motivated to be included in the newest fashion trend. Within the first year DuPont sold over 64 million pairs of stockings.
With the outbreak of World War II nylon production for fashion was ceased and was used for the war effort. Women resorted to using makeup to decorate their legs, like drawing fake seams up the back of their legs with eyebrow pencils. When World War II ended in 1945, women began to demand nylons again, however their demand greatly exceeded supply by two years. Newspapers ran stories with headlines such as "Women Risk Life and Limb in Bitter Battle over Nylons." In New York, Macy's sold out of it's entire stock of 50,000 pairs of nylons in six hours, leaving a long line of unhappy, barelegged women. Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh a mob of 40,000 women stood all night in a torrential rainstorm to buy nylons from a tiny hosiery shop. |

While pantyhose were invented in 1959, they were not commonly available for retail purchase until 1962.
