20 Crazy Facts You May Not Know

20) Our Long Walk

Over the course of the average person’s life, he or she will walk a distance equal to around five times the length of the equator. As a total, that’s close to 125,000 miles that the average person will walk. Kind of puts a two-mile jog into serious perspective.

19) Everybody Hates Mondays

The most popular day of the week for people to commit suicide on is Monday. Though it’s a dark statistic, it could be useful to keep in mind if you know anyone who might be going through a tough time.

18) How About We Just Don’t?

One of the earliest known forms of birth control was used by Egyptians around 2000 B.C. Yup, they would smear the reptilian poop over their genitals, which, since it has a slight alkaline formulation, would work as a spermicide during intercourse.
Now that’s dirty.

17) The Million Dollar Cow

In July of 1985, a cow named Mist sold at an auction in Vermont for $1.3 million. That makes her the most expensive cow ever sold at auction. She was purchased by a group called the Mist Syndicate who was headed by a man named Jerome Rappaport. The owner of Mist before the auction? Jerome Rappaport. Seriously.

16) The Symbolism of Playing Cards

The symbols used for the suits in playing cards actually have a pretty substantial meaning behind them in regards to the major sources of economy in the middle ages: Spades stand for military; diamonds stand for the merchant class; clubs stand for agriculture; and hearts stand for the church.

15) What’s That Smell?

A skunks odor is so pungent that a human can actually pick up the scent from a mile away. Especially when you consider just how bad human beings’ sense of smell is, that just goes to show how insanely strong a skunks stink must be.

14) Selfish Serpents

The two heads of a double-headed snake will fight each other over food even though they actually share the same stomach. While I am not sure just how delicious raw rodent can be, I’m fairly certain it isn’t good enough to fight with your second head over. Is it?

13 Better Than a Super Soaker

The human heart is capable of generating enough pressure as to squirt blood up to 30 feet. That is precisely why medical professionals who draw blood for a living wear those plastic faceguards. Could you imagine being sprayed with someone else’s blood all over your face?

12) Another of Dr. Seuss’ Legacies

Although he’s most well-known for his series of “Cat in the Hat” books, Dr. Seuss left something else behind as a legacy that had plagued kids for decades, at least until the term started to have a cooler connotation to it. He coined the word “nerd” in his book “If I Ran the Zoo.”

11) Well, At Least It’s a Liquid

You know how you can hear the ocean when you put your ear to a seashell? Well, that sound is not anywhere close to being the ocean. It is actually the sound of blood being forced through the veins in your ear. Try it out, you can hear that same sound just by cupping your hand around your ear.

10) That’s One Way to Do It

The phrase, “To be (or get) fired” is hard enough to cope with nowadays, but it has some pretty terrible roots: Long ago, when clans wanted to do away with someone without actually killing them, they would simply burn the person’s house down.
I think I’d rather just lose my job.

9) That’s Still 12 Too Many

Every day in the United States, on average, 12 babies are given to the wrong people. Though, to be fair, that means that only six medical professionals are messing up each day (since each mess up means two sets of parents get the wrong kid), but that still seems like a mighty high number.

8) Elephants Are Awkward

This is actually a twofer: Elephants, with all their goofiness of trunks and big ears have some odd facts associated with their legs. First, they are the only mammal in the world that can’t jump. Second, they are also the only animal in the world that has four knees.

7) Long-Distance Sniffing

If you thought that our ability to smell a skunk from over a mile away seemed implausible, you’ll find this factoid highly improbable (even though it’s true): Male emperor moths can smell a female of their species from a distance of up to seven miles.
To be honest, I didn’t even know moths had noses, so there’s a bonus fact for you.

6) Sounds Like a Good Enough Reason

A large majority of American college students, around 70%, went (or go to) college for the sole reason of making more money. While that makes perfect sense, I am now more curious about why the other 30% of college students are taking classes. Must be for the education alone, right?

5 Two Neutral Feet

Before the 1800s, the standard pair of shoes were identical to each other. This meant that there was no variation between the left and right shoe. Nowadays, if you can find shoes like these, they are called “straights”, but you will have a hard time finding any that are as comfortable as normal left and right shoes.

4) …And It’s All Sitting on the I-5

Did you know that nearly 25% of Los Angeles’ land area is covered with autos? That means that there is nearly 619,080 square feet that cars are taking up in LA. That converts to 117.25 square miles. Anyone who has ever been to Los Angeles shouldn’t be surprised by this fact, though, as they’ve most likely been stuck on the city’s freeways for hours just to get a mile or two.

3) Calorie Counters, Bad News

If you are one of those people who calculate precisely how many calories you consume throughout a given day, here is another figure for records: Every time you lick a stamp to send a letter, you are consuming 1/10 of a calorie.
Another surprising fact: People actually still send enveloped mail.

2) When You Put it That Way…

The average person is 800 percent more likely to have a police officer end his or her life than by a terrorist. Still, the likelihood of anyone being killed by either a cop or a terrorist is insanely low, so you shouldn’t spend your time worrying about either. Otherwise, they win (whichever side you’re worried about).

1) It’s Not a Game

Have you heard the phrase “Playing Possum” before? It was derived from the fact that opossums will apparently feign death in an attempt to drive away possible threats. Here’s the thing, though, they actually end up so terrified by whatever is threatening or harming them that they pass out from the sheer terror of the encounter.
