Angry busted taking pics

Holy shit. Has this or anything similar happend to anyone? Was in a public place taking pictures, some girl thought I was taking pics of her but I was taking pics of someone else. Long strory short, she freaked and complained to a local security guard. Security grabbed me & threatend to arrest me. They let me go once I deleted my entire card.

I wasnt doing anything wrong but it sure was nerve rackign to say the least.

Talking

What happened to you hasn't happened to me but the following did happen:

my gf (now ex) and I were out and about and decided to have some fun. So I stopped at a local self-serve car wash. We got out and I took some photos while she stripped. Even though it was late at night, we heard some people talking across the street. She threw on her bikini and we drove away. When we got back to the house, she was still pretty amped up. I suggested some more photos. With a smile on her face, I followed her to the side of the house. Once again I started taking photos as she stripped. Before she was completely naked we once again heard people walking down a side street. The street and the side of the house line up so she would have been in clear view (a bright street light provided adequate lighting for sight). I suggested let's go but she just smiled and stripped off her bikini bottoms. While standing there naked bathed in the street light, I shot a few more photos; all the while we could still hear the people walking in our direction.

What happened to you was completely illegal. You are within your right to photograph anyone who is out in public on public land.

You are correct unless they have asked you to stop taking thier picture at which time if you continue taking thier picture then you are breaking the law.

Please provide a reference - this is not true in all US states. Or perhaps you mean Canada?

Not true in the United States....no expectation of privacy in public.

Default Heard this has happened

Friend was asked by police to show his photos in airport US . They told him a woman complained . I told him news outlets do it all the time. I thought it was illegal . I thought though that I heard about someone getting in trouble for unlawful surveillance . Not sure what that entails .

I've never been officially busted by security or the police, but I have had a number of people question me on why I was taking pictures regardless of whether I was shooting in their direction or not, and on three occasions I've had people attempt to stop me from shooting at something that was completely unrelated to them. These are people with no lives. Never once has it ever occurred to me to question, much less prevent someone from taking a photo of something on the street.

You should have stood your ground. No one can force you to delete photos you've taken, and private security has absolutely no authority over you.

Wrong. If they are in public there is no law that forbids you from taking pictures even if the subject complains. If you follow them while taking pictures, after they've complained, then that is a whole other story.

Was it a security guard, or a police officer? If it was a security guard, then it doesn't sound like it was truly public. You can be "in public", so to speak, but if it's actually private property, like a mall, it's a different story. On private property, the owner (or security guard) has every right to tell you what you can and cannot do, including photography.

Default Minors

Many places have laws against taking pictures of minors, even if it is in a public place and the minors aren't the main focus of the picture.
