This couple didn't seek privacy in some isolated slag pile off the beaten track. Their rock at Icebox Quarry was plainly visible from the clifftop trails on three sides of the deep pit. I wasn't the only voyeur; far to my right, 30 feet high atop the cliffs, stood another man with a camera. (No, it wasn't Catman.) The pair had to know they were being watched and photographed; several times they glanced up at the clifftops as if acknowledging the observers.

The photos give a sense of water clarity. Icebox was situated such that surface runoff didn't flow into the pit. Filtered groundwater alone filled the hole. During extremely hot weather, Icebox was the place to be. All summer the water remained frigid because direct sunlight beamed into the pit for only a few hours at midday and every afternoon the towering cliff on the west shaded both water and rocks. The cold water created a microclimate in the pit the same way the Humboldt current keeps coastal California cool in contrast to the hot, dry interior. As you clambered down the slag pile, the air temperature cooled by degrees until, at water's edge, it felt like being inside an air-conditioned building. On those oppressive dog days, Icebox saw quite a bit of use by those not having sex.

Open sex at Packinghouse was an infrequent occurrence, at least I didn't see it very often. During my three years at the quarries, I witnessed only two other instances of public sex and in both cases I wasn't in a position to photograph. One summer weekend I camped at Rosebud. Early Saturday morning, I packed up my stuff and walked my bicycle along the trail through the forest toward Sundown. The place was deserted save for a couple, 40ish, having missionary intercourse in the upper, flat area of the eastern slag pile. At that hour of the morning, 7:30, they must have assumed they had awhile until people started arriving. Wrong.
My silent approach went unnoticed. At a distance of 90 feet from the oblivious lovers, I leaned my bike against a rock and rummaged in my panniers for my camera but before I could switch on the light meter, the woman turned her head and noticed me. She gasped loudly and the man climbed off. Both got up and walked into the woods nearby and that's when I discovered what they were doing there so early: they had camped overnight as well.

Another instance was while voyeur snorkeling. A college age couple was seated chest deep on a submerged rock. To observers above the waterline, they appeared to be sitting side-by-side, just groovin' on the scene, but underwater, they were trading hand.

I won't chronicle the number of times I saw, through my mask underwater, guys seated on submerged rocks while pleasuring themselves. I have neither the time or inclination and even if I had plenty of both, I wouldn't want to crash the server.

Try as I may -and believe me, I was looking- never did I see two girls doing the deed. Damn!
