This is just my observation but a lot of members including posters ask for comments and thanks but never seem to say thanks themselves.
I thought that over the years that been a member of various forums that it is politness to simply click the thanks button for appreciating a post. Some manners are been lost - or lost in translation. comments welcome |

The point of the the "Thanks" button is so that people have a simple of showing their appreciation without bumping or cluttering up a thread.
Without the "Thanks" option, you would see lots of threads with a post or two of photos or videos and then a lot of "Thanks" type posts that don't add much to the the thread. With the "Thanks" button, posters can see that they are appreciated and the threads can also stay focused on the material being posted. Anytime somebody wants to add a thoughtful comment or new material to a thread they are free to make a new post. Personally, I think our system strikes a good balance. |

Cheers admin, thanks for deleting my post last night, since then 5 needless comments have evolved. My point yesterday being that members with 250+ posts have only thanked less than a hundred posts - don't they appreciate what other posters do! And yes there is a fine balance but just my observation.

I have thanked many times to find that they are not there once I come back from viewing a picture I liked .. so I would imagine many of my thanks have been removed simply because I chose to have a look at a picture further down the page .. It seems unless I go back up the page and hit thank again ,, the thanks are all gone...

I've run into this issue as well. What I've found is that if you hit 'thanks' then use the 'back' button to return to the forum, the 'thanks' falls off. If you use the page numbers to move forward or back, or use the links in the header, it's not a problem. I've found many posts that I know very well that I clicked the button only to return and find it gone. Another thing that works is to just refresh the page after clicking. (F5)
My pet peeve with the 'thanks' thing is posters that say they won't post anymore unless they get a certain number of thanks. Post or don't. If you're trying for high score, go buy a video game! |

I have solved that I use the "cheat mode" and then have unlimited "thanks", much easier ....only joking!!!I do however find it useful for when maybe you just want to say thank you as an encouragement, but have nothing useful to say, or just simply unsure at the time what you want to say. The thread "Let's start a chain" is a perfect example where the "thanks" button is absolutely perfect. I will admit though that I do enjoy receiving/reading comments/messages in mine and others posters threads too. You yourself Sparky 45 are a perfect example of a good comments/message writer, as you add something worthwhile in every thread you post too

I appreciate the fact that people spend time to collect, collate and upload pics for our viewing pleasure, and hitting the thanks button is not labour intensive. I do not comment on posts, usually, as all I would be doing would be to reiterate in words what the thanks button has already done for me, and simply clutter up the works.
I usually hit the thanks button when even one out of the pics in the post attracts me. The only times I do not say thank you is if there is not a single pic that merits appreciation - rare, but it does happen. The curious statistic that has me wondering is that, as of now, I have 399 posts. I have been thanked xx number of times in 387 posts. Oh dear me, where do I find those 12 unthanked posts? Where did I go wrong? What were those undeserving posts? <giggle> Perhaps not quite the right thread to say this, but the administrators deserve not only thanks but a big round of applause for their sterling work. Thank you ladies and gentlemen, unsung, but appreciated, truly.

But I can only speak for myself. I'll be 65 years next month. I've had enough porn over the years, both in real life and on the internet, to last many lifetimes. I've got three computers. The newest one is over 5 years old. It has (1)Terabyte hard drive and (2)250GB hard drives, all almost slap full. LOL. That's probably enough reason to not lurk anymore right there. But the main reason is that a lot of stuff being posted is older stuff(some newer) that has been cropped and is being recycled. I don't know who's doing the cropping and resizing, whether it's the poster on this site or the poster where he obtained the picture. But the point is I'm not going to lurk and thank a poster for a pic that I've already seen or has been cropped and resized. Yes, there are exceptions. For instance, Hogeye post his original work, as do a few others such as Pedro and RubberGears. I used to lurk and share in the newsgroups. Back in the 90's one major website had their lawyers send me a cease posting letter. But as I said, I don't lurk anymore. I started posting here last July. I simply wanted to share some of my original stuff. I may have asked at some point for people to hit the 'Thanks' button and I won't say that I won't ask again sometime in the future. But it's not because I need my ego stroked or that I plan to trade my 'Thanks' points in on a new car or a cup of coffee at Burger King. I simply need to know if I'm wasting my efforts. Some people don't know what it's like to have a slow connection and have to take 15 minutes to upload 6-10 pictures. If we had some way of gauging how many of our post were being downloaded that would be even better. But we live with what we've got and the 'Thanks' button is what tells me I should keep posting. I realize that some of my post are better than others. My last post before the one this morning got only 2 'Thanks'. But I look at the overall average. So far I've posted roughly 1,500 original pics in just over 190 post. As it stands now, I'm averaging over 10 'Thanks' per post. That gives me reason to continue posting when I can even though a lot of my time nowadays is consumed by getting my drag car ready for the season. My post today was my first in several weeks because I've been spending all my time building a 700HP motor. Now, should I take the time and just run through a few threads hitting the 'Thanks' button in order to be polite? Or should I take care of my other business and chores so that I can hope to find time maybe tomorrow or the next day to post some more pictures? Personally, I don't want people just hitting the 'Thanks' unless they're sincere. If my post aren't appreciated they shouldn't hit the 'Thanks'. Then I'd stop posting and free up time for other things. My general rule of thumb: If I download a picture and save it to my hard drive, I should hit the 'Thanks'. Just my opinion. |
