Default general JPG help

In my quest to find new pictures and snoop around I come accross the odd computer dumped in the bin cupboard. I tend to nab the hard drive out of it and run Recuva on it to see what I find.

The problem i'm having is that it finds JPG files but I have nothing that will open them, even image preview doesn't work. I've tried this on both xp and win 7 and get the same.

For what it's worth i've also run Recuva on a old HDD of mine out of a win me machine and had no issues at all

Any suggestions?

Ok going on from this i've found some pics on this site I can't open up. If anyone wants to download the first zip in this thread and see if they can view all the pics it would be great https://forum.oneclickchicks.com/showthread.php?t=111967

Downloaded the zip file, got it to unzip but can only see/view the last 50 pics.

Cannot see/view the first 50.

even photoplus X4 does not recognise them.

will keep trying though.

If I find a prog that opens em, will let everyone know.

Default zipped files

Regarding KE9-AM Set 001.zip

Hey guys, the "first 50" are image files of the last 50 made from a very old win-zip program. You can just discard them. An old way of zipping or compressing files made an image of the file first and then compressed it. I suspect that KarnEvel (the guy who first zipped these photos) was using a Windows 98 machine, and the zip program that went with it.

You can discard or ignore a file that starts with ._KE9 and just use the files that start with KE9...........

The current version of win zip or 7Zip or the zip that is built into XP or 7 will extract the files from these old KarnEvel files just fine. If you are using an apple machine or Linux - I don't know what you do.

No real help with an unknown file. But you should know that there are many encryption programs that will scramble files. Also, just assigning .jpg as a file extension doesn't make it a .jpg file. One way to hide a file is to just change the file extension. If you know which one it is, it's pretty secure.

If I was doing it, (looking in an unknown hard drive) I would try every graphic program at my disposal and see what works......or doesn't.

For instance the free, open source GIMP program is very robust. Also you could google "free graphics software" and there are some very good ones usable for free.

Wish I could help more.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into it more at some point.

I have just installed GIMP and it says the files aren't .jpg's as they start ******

Maybe this is going to be a pointless effort anyway
