Default Old codecs not supported on Vista

Just had an alarming discovery that some old .AVI files won't play on my new computer, particularly my precious old "Libby Hoeler" hi-res .AVI files. I used GSpot to find the codec (Indeo 5) is not supported on Vista. I tried downloading and installing, however it doesn't work and GSpot still says that codec is not installed.

Has anyone found a way around this with any "global" codecs? Any new players that will play everything? I tried BS player, VLC player, DIVx Plus, Classic WMP via K-Lite Codec pack, none of them will play the video portion.

Help!
