Ingrid Marie Rivera was the victim of a dirty tricks campaign
A beauty queen won a top competition despite having her make-up and clothes covered in pepper spray.

Ingrid Marie Rivera was left swollen and covered in rashes and was forced to strip backstage following the incident.

Bags of ice had to be put on her face and body to fight the effects of the inflammatory spray, which also causes body spasms, breathing problems and a burning sensation on the skin. Effects last for up to an hour.

Ms Rivera was composed in front of judges and cameras but once she was backstage organisers tried desperately to ease the 24-year-old's agony.

Spokesman Harold Rosario said: 'We thought at first it was an allergic reaction, or maybe nerves.' Tests on her clothes and make-up revealed they had been doused with pepper spray.

Ms Rivera went on to win the competition, in Puerto Rico, and will represent the island in the 2008 Miss Universe contest.

Her rivals for the crown had complained she was too experienced and she had suffered a series of setbacks during the competition.

Her bag, which contained dresses, make-up and credit cards, was stolen and the final day of the pageant was postponed after a bomb threat.

Jealous rivals claimed she 'bought' the title and local media have been accused of stoking up controversy.

Ms Rivera, who has won a series of beauty contests in Puerto Rico, admitted she had considered quitting.

She added: 'At one point I said, “Am I a masochist?”. But I said “I am with God and this is my goal, regardless of the results”.'

Organisers of the contest said they were confident of catching whoever was responsible for the 'prank' but said they were handling the investigation themselves and had not called the police.

I wouldn't call the Metro a sleazy tabloid. The Star, The News of The World, the S** (sorry I can not bring myself to type the name of that sorry evil little rag) are tabloids by their very nature. The Metro is just a freebie you pick up for free on the bus to work to help you pass the 15-20 minute journey.

Still, I guess she would be kinda embarrassed if she found out the storry had made it all the way across the Atlantic to Britain...
