I will be there. I will take photos. I do want to point out how despite the geographic distance the massive difference between these events. Fremont has photographers everywhere, people pose, etc. Portland has way more people by a lot and while photography isn’t explicitly prohibited, it’s frowned upon. You set up a camera someone might knock it down, break it, etc. it’s just different. You def wouldn’t want to take photos of someone without permission unless you are being sly. You could literally be physically attacked. I’ve done both rides nearly 10x. It’s an entirely different world, one is a spectacle (Fremont) where you know what you signed up for, one is a protest. And while it’s mostly an excuse to get naked and walk around, the attitude is “it’s a protest”. People pose for photos but if someone came up and then took a photo of them they would ask you to delete it probably 50/50. 3 hours away but entirely different events.

Thanks but no thanks for the heads up! I would encourage anyone wanting to go and take pictures or videos to go and see for themselves and take as many photos and videos as you would like. Your post is ridiculous and you are using non-legal weasel phrases and terminology like "frowned upon" or "you def wouldn’t want to take photos of someone without permission unless you are being sly" to make a completely legal activity sound like a violation of the rules. Your "advice" is nothing more than gatekeeping, fearmongering, and an attempt to deter people from attending with cameras because you want to control the dissemination and flow of images and videos from this event. You are implying that people are subject to physical harm or property damage and they have no recourse or they simply have to accept it because this is just how the ride in Portland works.

This protest takes place in public, in a large American city and there is absolutely no expectation of privacy. The participants who attack are in violation of the law, not the camera person. What you are describing is called implied coercion. You are basically implying that people should forgo or consider forgoing their protected rights to take pictures or give up their rights out of fear. The suggestions of aggressive individuals in a crowd acting as informal enforcers with no legal authority should not be tolerated or normalized. This idea is ridiculous and there is recourse. If anyone is physically assaulted or threatened with harm, immediately report the incident to law enforcement and provide photographic or video evidence of the occurrence. Do not allow fearmongering and gatekeeping forum members or other censorship vigilantes in public to trample on your rights to photograph or record a completely legal event and public protest. You have rights and are protected by the law. I have been to the ride several times and it is an amazing event filled with lively and good spirited people for the most part. There are always an aggressive few who will bluff or posture in an attempt to socially shun those taking photographs or videos but they are expressing a personal preference, not a legally protected or enforceable one. The overwhelming majority of people who participate do understand "what they signed up for" and that they have absolutely no legal footing or authority to stop anyone from photographing or recording this very public event and protest. This event is both a spectacle and a protest that dwarfs Fremont in both scale and scope, so to place Fremont at the pinnacle as the ultimate spectacle comparatively speaking and downplay PDX as just a simple protest and a non-spectacle without hundreds or even thousands of people with cameras is both laughable and truly disingenuous.

Not saying people shouldn’t take photos. Again, I said I do, and have every year. I’m just saying it is a different vibe. Unsure if it wasn’t clear. I’m saying Fremont it wouldn’t feel weird to take a photo of someone without asking. Here it would. That’s all! Trust me I want to see more photos come out too!

Never said it was illegal. Not trying to gatekeep. But I think there is a pretty simple answer. One event has thousands of photos come every year (Fremont) the other event is far bigger and Flickr searches most years have literally zero. Matter of fact the most recent photo was TAKEN June 20th 2019, so it’s been over 7 years since someone posted a photo from there on the site where you find the most photos of naked bike rides. So, be logical. Is one of those two events photographed differently? Why? Might it be the attitude of the people participating?

Again I’d love to see that change. Maybe this is the year.

If literally anything you said here were true: there would be pictures of the PDX ride all over the internet all the time! It’s clearly a gigantic ride! Where are all the pics?!? Maybe…just maybe it’s because the riders there are so damn agro. It’s not one person that’s the freakin “gatekeeper.” Theres likely thousands of gatekeepers! As I understand it, that was his point!
