In boxing here is an advantage in being as heavy as possible for that weight band. As long as you are below the maximum weight (even in sports gear) you are OK. Therefore there is no need to be nude.

But because our weight fluctuates slightly throughout the day, and scales vary; someone might be slightly over the limit when being officially weighed, so they sometimes remove their sports gear (or more likely go to the toilet) for the weigh-in. On the rare ocassions when they remove their sports gear and are weighed nude, others use towels to screen them. There are one or two famous "towel malfunctions" floating around.
