I�ve got an old nokia, it�s got a few photos but none of interest but there may well be plenty of deleted stuff, what would be the best way to recover?

I can only suggest you plug it into a pc and access the internal files or storage and run Revuva or a similar ptogram on it. There is a lot of information in OCC threads on topics like this but you'll have to search for threads. I assume you've gone through this thread; I think this is where I saw the recommendation for Recuva.
