Although they are not smiling, nor posing as if for a sexy photoshoot - they don't seemed frightened, cowed, bruised, undernourished, unkempt or dirty as I would expect captured women might. Their pose and expression is similar to ethnographic and medical pictures I've seen. There are many tribal groups of people in the hills of Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam who have their own distinct languages and cultures eg the Hmong, Karen, Katchen in Burma/Myanmar. If the date and description in the original post are correct, then this might be part of an ethnographic study. The systematic female nudity being in the interests of science - of course.

Finding the original source of the pictures could give a more accurate answer than either of our speculations.

I suspect these women were prisoners at Toul Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge were in power 1975-1979. Most of the prisoners were killed.

Can you explain what led you to this theory? In all the photos I’ve seen of Tuol Sleng prisoners have featured just a single subject; and they have been clothed, shot from the waist/chest up, and tagged with identification numbers. The presence of jewelry also seems out of place.

I don’t really have a dog in this fight, especially since I’m generally not interested in this kind of material. But I’ve been following this discussion, and your comment represents a most unexpected turn.

Thanks for your comment… makes sense now that I see it from this viewpoint… happy that these women weren’t subjected to any violence, which you obviously saw (and I missed) and that’s a little reassuring… great stuff

I am just guessing here. The ladies look Khmer and they look like they are in a prison setting. Most Toul Sleng photos I saw there were ID photos of prisoners, male and female, all of whom died. The photos could also be from days when the French ran Indochina and they could be photos of prisoners then.
