I think we need to accept that the Golden Age of WNBR is now firmly behind us.

With all due respect, I'm not convinced. People on here have been forecasting that for a couple of years now, not least riders who've posted hoping to influence the behaviour of photographers. But I genuinely don't see any definitive decline.

Yes, 2014 and 2015 were stand-out years across most UK rides in terms of numbers of female riders- probably largely because both were great weather-wise. The weather in 2016 was really grim, and despite that, in 2017 Bristol had its highest ever number of partially and fully nude women; Manchester came close to matching its highest.

What is maybe changing is the number of photos easily available, and this is in line with what participants want. Personally I'd much prefer to have fewer photos of more women than more photos of fewer women. Yes, Cardiff had a weird year this year, but tbh for me it's only ever been a couple of notches above the naturist-only provincial rides, and has yielded top class stuff rarely (again, 2015 was lovely). It did have a decent number of female participants this year- a not unusual number- just hardly any photos for the various reasons that have been speculated.

2017 was a solid year across the UK rides, despite or maybe even because of the stranger political backdrop. I can't speak for international rides, and my guestimates of the huge London and Brighton numbers are not infallible. But I've read lots of predictions of 'peak-WNBR', and the reality looks very different to me, at least. We may have a better idea in a couple of months when the dates are set and FB ride pages posted, but again- especially so in 2014 and 2015- there is very little correlation indeed between the number who sign up on FB, and the number who actually ride.

Just my tuppence worth!

What the UK rides needs, is in short supply........warm, sunny weather! I think that affects female attendance as much as the hoards of intrusive snappers.

Get naked and ride yourself (as I used to do) you can snap away and seldom get refused a lovely pose from most of the delightful ladies.

Default Brighton 2017 recent additions

From a quality poster who recently added over a hundred photos to his Brighton set. Watermarked so no samples but well worth checking out.

Best wishes for the new year!

Interesting thread. 2017 was my first WNBR. I really enjoyed the experience and have no problem being photographed by respectful photographers (lots of my pics have been posted here - I'm 'real person' and 'VIP'). Flickr is great as I'm usually tagged there (by somebody) which I prefer as it enables me to keep a record of photos of myself. And I'm grateful for some of the great photos that I have had taken of myself.

London was particularly uncomfortable however. I started at Hyde Park and the scrum of photographers was pretty full-on. Some literally jumped in front of me and got run over (by the many riders). You can generally see from my expression where somebody has leapt out from behind a tree in order to take a pic. I think this kind of behaviour is unfortunate and will definitely put off potential (female) newbies...and in general it is the women who are targeted in this way. As far as I'm concerned there is no need for this to happen as if I'm asked politely by a photographer if they can take my pic I would be happy to oblige - and in general (from my experience) most other female riders feel the same way. There are 1000s of photographers taking pics along the routes so anybody taking part does so with the knowledge that they're going to get snapped (unless they're incredibly naive).

The other potential issue that I can see that may be turning people off from taking part in the WNBR is what happens to the images once they are processed and ready to be revealed to the world. I love to show off my pics but not everybody feels the same way. Anybody taking part must realistically accept that images will appear online (hence disguises perhaps for some) but I think sometimes things get a bit out of hand and the potential implications could prove too much for some. The prospect of trying to establish true identities and inappropriate commentary are things that potential WNBR riders never quite anticipated when they signed up to participate. If images were merely viewed, shared and appreciated without all of the weird stuff I'm sure a LOT more people (female riders) would be happier to participate.

My experience has been fantastically positive and I appreciate the support but I am perhaps coming from a different place where I love to be photographed and love to have people see the results...respect, politeness and general decency is all I ask for.

NakedLu, I am a big fan of your flickr account, and loved your vimeo account as well (while it lasted). Thanks for sharing your experiences and views about the WNBR. Perhaps some people will take notice of what you wrote, and your effort might make things a little bit better next time (I'm hopeful, but won't be holding my breathe tho). You're a breath of fresh air. Thanks

Not entirely sure if there ever was a golden age of WNBR. The past two London rides were excellent, much more fun than Brighton for me personally. The situation at the latter has reached a pretty stupid level of misplaced paranoia now. The hypocrisy is staggering and hardly bodes well for the future. Trying to encourage riders to refuse permission for photos even from respectable snappers (press, naturist lifestyle mags, cycle journals and such) is just ludicrous. And yet that's what happened at the 2017 Brighton ride.

The past two or three Manchester and Bristol rides were also extremely good. They certainly don't seem to be in decline. I do think most of the minor rides are a bit pointless, if I'm honest. Saying that, I covered and very much enjoyed the small Canterbury and Folkestone rides in 2017. You turn up with a camera and people are actually pleased to see you at these

Weather plays a pretty big part, of course. And the frankly unacceptable and intrusive behaviour of some people prying into the everyday lives of certain riders has cost WNBR some of its biggest stars. But turnout remains high, new faces appear each year and the rides are generally well received and increasingly accepted as genuine protest events.

The whole snapper paranoia thing (only really an issue at the Brighton ride) could be helped significantly by issuing official passes. But this is discussed year after year and nothing ever comes of it.

Default Repeat London rider candid shots

Ok, I've been back over this thread a couple of times but I think the post which originally highlighted this rare money-shot of a popular, regular rider in London may have disappeared in the great purge that happened after Brighton. Apols if I missed it and that the photo is a repost- credit to the original poster.

Anyway here's an Al*my photo with a better angle. The link is ridiculous but I didn't want to tiny URL it as that would give a live link. She's so handy with that fanny pack that these are real rarities; if anyone's such a fan of her that you want to shell out £12 for the full image I'd appreciate a copy as a finders fee!
