So Bay to Breakers 2016 is only 50 days away, I'll be flying in and have convinced my girlfriend to run naked.

Can anyone explain to me nudity laws for the event/San Fran in general? I have heard conflicting reports and stipulations. Although it obviously happens at the event, this is the last bit of convincing the lady to strip down so I need something concrete.

I suggest you Google the bare to breakers group, the guys wearing only yellow caps. They have been running for years, with no problems at all. You can sign up and run with them, as far as I know. Good luck convincing her!

As of 2012, public nudity is now illegal in San Francisco except for events such as Gay Pride and Folsom Street Fair (which has a LOT of nudity). So nudity is technically illegal for Bay to Breakers, but there are lots of nude folks and the police, in the cases where they do anything, have been asking people to put clothes on instead of arresting or ticketing people.

So, basically, you should be fine and you should absolutely ask your girlfriend to come back for Folsom.

Ok, as far as my understanding goes, it seems as though the nudity laws are permitting for events like Folsom Street Fair, Bay to Breakers, SF pride, and a few other city-wide events. Otherwise, it is now illegal to be nude in public. This wasn't always the case. Until recently, public nudity was mostly legal at anytime and any place in SF until Board of Supervisors member Scott Wiener allegedly came along and initiated sweeping changes and nudity law reform a few years ago. Believe it or not, I once saw a video of a woman casually jogging completely nude in the heart of San Francisco's financial district during the early morning worker/commuter rush hour. The incident was captured by a passing motorist as the woman casually jogged the sidewalk nude (with sneakers on) amidst the morning workers. I wanted to download the video but could never relocate it after bookmarking it. It was quickly removed from the original outlet in which I found it, so I'm still kicking myself to this day for being such a neglectful OCCer. It would have made for an awesome post. Sorry for the tangent... but the moral of that particular story is basically life used to be pretty good in SF regarding everyday casual or public nudity laws.

Anyway, back to the issue at hand, (no pun intended) most of the aforementioned events have been granted an exemption as afar as I can recall regarding the most recent legislation and laws implemented over the past few years. Public nudity is still legal at these events. Others here can weigh in here with any current or updated developments or changes. As far as the police citing or ticketing people, I've always understood this as being a simple misinterpretation of the current nudity laws or exemptions made by misinformed or overzealous police.

I would however search the Bay to Breakers 2015 thread on this forum to get an idea as to the number of participants taking part in last year's event nude. There seemed to be quite a few people participating and I do not recall hearing of many people (particularly women) ever being harassed by the police or authorities whatsoever.

I noticed many of the participants in last year's race did cross the finish line completely nude and linger a bit after the race, so I'd assume there were no major problems or harassment from race officials or SFPD. IMO, I'd say go for it and have a blast!

I'm sure your girlfriend will be grateful for the experience and have tons of fun being completely nude in front of thousands of people. I'm sure it'll be quite the adrenaline rush for the both of you. Hope you guys will make it to the event.
