Actually, as someone who has traveled extensively, I'll take old, frumpy and EFFICIENT over too cute to be bothered.

As someone who first traveled by air 54 years ago, unfortunately, it most often goes the other way. Old and frumpy flight attendants are most often burnt out too, while younger and cute still have the energy and interest to actually be helpful to passengers. Except JetBlue, where all flight attendants are snippy and unhelpful, regardless of age.

I agree completely with Jim. The older and frumpier they are, the bolder and grumpier they are. However, I have definitely seen the young, attractive - 'youre not worth my time' attendants as well. That is why I didnt make it an age thing; I think that a lot of the behavior is rooted in policy and/or how friendly they are or are not required to be to customers. Same applies to gate agents and ticket agents.

Reminds me of an old joke:

A man is sitting at the airport next to a flight attendant, and he can't recall what airline the uniform is for. As he is the shy and retiring type, he's reluctant to strike up a conversation directly, so he tries out a few airline slogans to see if he gets a reaction.
First, "fly the friendly skies" - she glances at him but there is no response. So, not United Airlines. Then he tries "a great way to fly". Still nothing, so she's not a Singapore girl. Thinking maybe she works for Qantas, he tries "the spirit of Australia".
The woman glares at him, says "fuck off!" and stalks away. Ahhh, he thinks, at least that settles it - it's JetBlue!

I remember PSA where all the attendants were friendly, joked a lot and seemed to really enjoy their work. Then the line was bought out by US Air (useless air) and it clamped down as that behavior was "non-professional". BS, it made the flight more relaxing and inviting. Also remember Republic when I had flown 1st class and the 4 of us in 1st class and the flight attendants told jokes for 2 hours. Alas, that line is long gone. But, Air CAL had the most beautiful attendants. That was back when California was the land of milk and honey instead of the land of empty pockets and high taxes.
