arty look back at Cannes 75/85
 

Today we feature a retro look back at Cannes 75/85 by a French photographer (or poster at Flickr). The pics are in black and white. A few are definately cool.

Anyway, I was hoping for more of an explanation for what I am seeing. I know there is a lot of celeb type photography at Cannes each year, and sometimes there is nudity. Maybe some of these women are celebs.

Klondike: The tradition of topless starlets at Cannes goes back over 50 years, when a famous shot of Robert Mitchum (himself somewhat of a Hollywood bad boy in earlier days - popped for dope back when many stories called it "marihuana"!) and then-pretty-much-unknown Simone Silva was posted 'round the world. Your guy, according to the linked Flickr page, photographed the same sort of thing in its halcyon days through its succumbing to political correctness. Most of the subjects, then, will be as much trivia items now as, say, Linda Hopkin: "Those Were the Days," my friend/we thought they'd never end/we'd sing and dance/ forever and a day...Enjoy 'em as pictures of women, if not as the celebs they probably never became.

Don't know how long it's been going on, but Cannes also holds the European Adult Film Fest every year at about the same time as the big film festival, maybe these are porn stars of the day.

In the 70's, there was a huge amount of 'mainstream' soft porn (think Emanuelle) being made. These was normally publicised alongside mainstream films at Cannes. It would ensure some 'exposure' of your sexy film if one of the 'stars' just happen to lose her swimsuit on the beach, while the press was there.

The woman in the first picture, leaning over with the dog, is Edy Williams. B movie starlet and at one time married to Russ Meyers, she made a career of going to Cannes and award shows (that she couldn't get into) wearing revealing clothing and attracting attention.
