I use Interleaving (Ctrl+I in both VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod) to adjust my audio if they're out of synch. I have never separated the audio and video files; they come from the same VOB file. When the Interleave window opens, you just fill in the "Delay audio track by" field in the "Audio skew correction" section.

If the instructions on the Interleave window aren't too clear for you here's another way of looking at it: If you hear them talking before their mouths move, the audio is playing too early so you want to adjust using a positive value (eg. 500). If you hear them talking after their mouths move the audio is playing too late so you want to use a negative value (eg. -500). It's very trial and error. I recommend going in increments of 500ms.
