Default "Old Time" Windows Media Player Download? For AVI, etc.

I have recently switched computers and I am now running Windows 7. Back when I was running Vista on my old machine, I had downloaded an "old time" looking Windows Media Player that played virtually every single thing I attempted to play. I have no idea where I found the download, and thought it may have even been here or at least someone here might know what I'm talking about. This was, without a doubt, the very best player I ever had. However, I have no idea where to find it. None of the AVI codec or anythinig of that nature is helping me view .avi files, which, for the most part, I can not play whatsoever.

If anyone can assist me, please post a link here or PM me. I'd really appreciate it. If I have to run something in "Windows XP Mode" that's fine, I have a version of Windows 7 that allows me to do that. Thank you!!

As far as codecs go, you're probably going to want to download the K-Lite Codec Pack to get all of the ones you really need: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm. Once you have that downloaded, you should be able to play most videos with no problem. For older versions of Windows Media Player, try here: http://www.oldversion.com/Windows-Media-Player.html

You can also try VLC Media Player, which a lot of people recommend, though I personally dislike the program: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Thank you. I will look into those. I'm not sure what version of WMP it was that I was using, but it seemed like it would have been something that you would've seen in Windows 98. The strange thing about it was, it seemed to have the AVI codec and everything I ever needed built right into it. I have tried VLC also. I don't like it.

It sounds like you were using Media Player Classic to me.

You are def. looking for WMedia Player Classic, it is such a rock they added it in with K-lite; when you install K-Lite (full) they give you WMedia Player Classic and they give you the option to associate video files with either WMedia Player or WMedia Player Classic so when you launch video it will do it with that program. (FYI, I also agree with Fango - VLC Player sux)
