Options for capping vids

For those of you who do not like bsplayer to cap your vids (I personally don't like it and removed it from my system about 2 minutes after installing it), you might want to consider using infranview: http://www.irfanview.com/

For those who don't know, infranview is a free picture player and is my personal favourite, but it also plays video clips.

To cap using infranview, first set the preferences:

1) open infranview
2) hit 'c'to bring up the 'capture setup screen' and set the settings as in pic #1 below.
3) hit start button on 'capture setup screen'
4) play vid in infranview
4) when you get to the part you want to cap, hit 'ctrl' + f11 on your key board at the same time and the captured pic will be saved to your desktop as in pic #2 below.
5) you'll see that there is a little toolbar at the top of the pic: to remove it go to the top left corner of the pictue, left click and drag down the right bottom of the pic - a square will now be over the pic section.
6) go to 'edit' in the top tool bar, hit 'crop'
7) go to file and hit 'save'. There is your cap (see picture 3)

It takes less than a minute to go from playing the vid to saving the cropped pic.

Maybe other people with suggestions on free ways to cap vids (and other than Windows MovieMaker which has been talked about to death) can post their suggestions and links here. That way, people who don't cap their vids can be directed to this thread and your bsplayer one.

OK, apparently I'm an idiot (no comments from the peanut gallery, please).

Open infran. done
Hit C. done, settings like yours.
Hit start. done
Play vid. done
Hit ctrl+f11. done

But look what I get:

I take it that Infranview didn't even play the vid? After testing out Infranview with several vids, I didn't have any problems so I thought I'd make up this helpful tutorial. Shortly after uploading it I tried some other vids and haven't been able to get more than half to play. Isn't that always the way. Anyway, suffice it to say that Infranview isn't the best capping option out there; it works great for some vids, just not enough for me to consider using it as my main capping program. I wanted to leave this thread up, however for people to offer their own capping suggestions like CP's link to Movie Snapshot. Hopefully we'll be able to find a free, stable, multiplatform player that can cap all types of clips really easily. Hmmmm, I may be asking for too much there.

To the board in general: what (free) software are you using to cap vids?

The only software I've been able to use is Movie Maker. For most vids, it's an ordeal just to get one shot (10+ minutes), so I either don't post (so as not to be rude) or post without caps (so as to share).

I also prefer virtual dub but for little videos is simple pause on player and Ctrl + Stamp/R Sist and paste in any graphic program !

Since it isn't mentioned yet I thought it was worth mentioning that on mac capping can be done with some function using built in system

Command(aka apple key)-shift 3 Whole Screen
Command-shift-4 Screen selection (locks screen into still motion so you can take time.)
Command-shift-4 then hit spacebar instead of using selection tool. The screen reanimates and a tool is active that will automatically capture any open window and all of it's contents by point and click..

Further features will require Snapz Pro from Ambrosia SW, which is unlimited when it comes to capture. As it can do stills movies etc in any format in any place...Including audio capture from mic or system audio output grabbing...I've used this tool many times to convert proprietary formats to standards by capturing from a playing source and saving output file in desired conversion format. In fact this even works with DRM media like itunes videos but that's another story.

As for Windows, if there is no desire to use any third party software. Pressing the "print screen" key will suffice for a screen cap. Then open paint and choose to paste it. There is screen you captured. Then crop what you wanted from it and save outgoing to format you wish.
