yes, I get this problem often and I have to zoom in extremely for the autofocus to realize what I want to take...
I guess it is due to the contrast between the object and the background not being very high under the glaring sun...
the problem is also that I cannot understand at that moment that the pic is out of focus

not very easy zooming in/out...

Speaking from experience: decrease focus area options to minimum in your camera, focus on area I marked on the picture, lift up focused camera and take the picture.

you can do than when you take pics normally... but on the beach I don't do that...
as I have said, my camera is hidden - I do not openly take pics... all the focus problems stem from this!
