was the old word for mate, i grew up in Kent and can remember using it to friends 'alright chav how ya doin' as used in a sentance, doesnt mean like that now as previous posts sugests

We'd probably also use 'sl*g' (*=a) as a good substitute for both.

Now a days I think those first two are universally used in English speaking countries. In days gone by you might have heard an English person saying 'tart' or 'slapper' or 'floozy'. But not so much now - they've all be replaced with 'wh*re' and 'sl*t'

I've heard mainly older people using "tart" and really older people using "floozy", but I've never heard of "slapper".
