I imagine the film Calendar Girls will of sparked off quite a few of them, especially for women taking part in them. The same way The Full Monty inspired a lot of men.

Well, the vet calendars are in fact nearly all from Australia. But as far as those that are from the UK are concerned, it all stems from the ladies whose idea was eventually made into the movie Calendar Girls. It seemed to strike a chord as a fun way to raise money for charity and snowballed.

Only a handful of UK universities have a vet course, and it's also a small enough country that there's mingling opportunities (symposiums, sports events) between the schools. So there's a lot of exchange of ideas. I'm guessing one of the vet schools started the thing, and the others picked up on it and did their own versions.
