these are very beautiful pictures. I find them nice to look at, but the exocitification of the women does not, for me, add any special excitement. Obviously they are being photographed as part of a public event, and one would hope that they are getting compensated for allowing the ceremony to be photographed and watched by tourists. / But it is completely ridiculous and demeaning to think that this is some kind of elaborate strip show being put on for the sake of American and European voyeurs. That they even involve little kids to make it seem more "real"? Time to break out of the voyeur bubble: There is more meaning to life than unexpected nakedness! These photographs are obviously of real traditional ceremonies, and it is very well studied and documented that they involved nudity. Note that there are plenty of nude men as well. And the "shaved" pussies? The men also don't have pubic hair! Not every people has the same abundance of body hair, and there are also traditional methods of hair removal practiced in all kinds of places. Thanks for the post.

He also mentioned BTW that the girls have tan lines which suggests that they do not dress like this every day,and that the dances are advertized to tourists. Also, posted here is possibly a mix, I believe, of real ceremonies and those singled out by gringuito (who didn't say which pics he was refering to) as taking place in Peru. I don't know which is which, and I don't see a lot of differences among the pics other than the presence of tourists and more western paraphenalia in some. one correction to the above - the Xingus are from the lower, not upper amazon basin of Brazil.
Also, my comment about the kiddies was made half in jest. Thats because at the time I wrote it I was also somewhat skeptical of what qrinquito said. If you reread it, the context in which that sentence was written should become more clear. Klondike |

Excellent pictures. Thanks! A couple of people mentioned the lack of pubic hair. The Amazon Indians pluck the hair from their eyebrows as well as from their pubic region to keep the parasites from nesting there. This I read in a National Geographic article some years back. Yes, I said "pluck".
