Sorry if this is naive, but can anyone recommend a safe source to download Winrar or some other .rar opening software for free? A quick Google search indicated that CNET is no longer trustworthy and attaches malware and worse things to its files. I don't know what to trust.

Get 7Zip. It's open source and you can get it from Sourceforge without any garbage. It does RAR files too.
