Brighton has a lot of good things going for it. It is the sort of city where off-beat events are not just tolerated, but wholeheartedly embraced. It has a young, hip, alternative population who are politically active, fabulously colourful and utterly shameless. The organisers have a good relationship with the police so the ride is always smoothly managed, it is always well attended by a diverse collection of riders, and it is a beautiful city to ride through. Plus what other UK ride has a skinny dip on a nude beach at the end? Worldwide, I would imagine the only ride with a similar vibe is probably Portland.

There may be other rides with more people, more women, more nudity, more famous landmarks, better opportunities for photographs, etc, but for me Brighton is right in the Goldilocks zone for most elements that matter.

Not this year. London was much better. The Hyde Park start was awful in all ways. But things quickly improved once they headed towards Trafalgar Square and the weather brightened.

Brighton seemed up tight this year. Not sure if it was the crap weather or not - probably not as the 2012 ride wasn't like that, despite all the rain. People were being requested to dress if they emerged from the painting area. That might have been because there wasn't the usual groups of people getting painted or chilling outside the zone. You also had this invisible barrier a good way from the perimeter zone and anyone who crossed it (as I did, finding it ridiculous) was confronted by that unhinged harridan. I really really wish I'd told her to fuck off now. I suspected she'd have tried getting the police involved if anyone stood up to her.

Usually Brighton seems like one big happy party. Take away the fun element who come out to ride if the weather is nice and you were mostly left with the inner circle. A quite small clique who all know each other. You also had an interesting assortment of overt exhibitionists, amateur porn performers and even a well known fetish queen (Kountess Von Kink AKA the London Dominatrix).

I'm open minded. Got no problem with whoever wants to take part turning up and doing so. But I do think it's a bit rich for the organisers to be obsessed with pervs with 'big lenses' when most of them are just hobby snappers and the actual people who use the ride for reasons of sexual gratification are inside the painting zone and taking part in the ride.
