Could be because they know that erect nipples can be an indication (or mistaken for one) of sexual arousal. Potentially even more embarrassing than merely being seen naked.

Well, to me it seems that we tend to cover what juts out the most as it feels vulnerable; guys cover their crotches and women their boobs.
