To me a Polaroid photo must have the border to look right. I remember some of our oldest black and whites being wrinkled right from the start and having streaks from not rubbing the wax coat on right. Even Polaroids got better when the auto color film came out.
Still at around $5 for a pack of 10 pictures averaged $1 a photo most times because so many came out too bright or dark. With the old cameras there was a BRIGHTNESS knob and I believe a FOCUS. Seems like we were on a light colored beach, in the snow, or in the shadows in woods. The knob was always turned wrong when trying to get a quick booby photo.
A $1 doesn't sound like much today. But I only made $1 or so an hour! Didn't take dozens of the same photo like with digital. In fact a two pack in a day was more than I usually took. Then I fell back with the 110 film camera and hoped our subjects would pose.
Anyway we love these old photos of all kinds. Maybe more will now leave on the boarders and flaws.

Back in my younger days, I managed a couple of photo labs--the 1970's to be specific. One of the labs handled upwards of 2,000 rolls of film per DAY. We had two 8-hour shifts to develop, print, inspect and package the work for a two-day turnaround for large retail stores around the region. Of course, porn would make its way into the mix too, so our inspection included necessary censoring which was quite strict at the time. I had a file cabinet in my office filled with "rejected" prints---although we were required to return the negatives to the owners.

Borders were the thing early on, in mass produced amateur photos processed at labs around the country. You might see a small black mark along the margin in some, which was for the photoelectric-eye on the paper roll cutter to slice the pictures as they sped through a machine. Photo paper came in rolls of up to 750 feet and in the width of 3.5 inches (or other widths for other sized prints.) When the mark was read by the eye, the cutter would slice the paper and the next frame would move forward---all at a very fast speed. Date imprints were also often exposed on the margin to help identify when the pictures were processed.

Then borderless came along and that mark was moved to the back of the print paper and the same process did the cutting. Aging of the old pictures causes the colors to shift and fade, depending on how they might have been stored. Yellowing of the margins on bordered prints are a natural part of the aging process as well.

There are actually programs out there that let people add a "border" to make their pictures look more retro. Fake Polaroids are among the favorites---for whatever reason I can't understand. When Polaroid introduced their first color film in the early 1960's people flocked to stores to buy their cameras so they could shoot their own color porn. I was among the many who owned a number of different Polaroids at the time and shot many hundreds of photos of my first wife, who was a very willing model. Eventually I moved on to processing my own color slides and still have a vast collection of goodies in my secret stash. Many I've shared around the 'net, some even here at OCC.

Vidguy thanks so much for the photo lab information. The little I know about it matches what your wrote. I do know that most labs were really too busy to do more than glance randomly at pictures on roll film. We lived in small town midwest where porn and sexy clothes were still frowned on by the general public.
We always thought we were among the rare perverts taking risque photos but later found out we were really normal. Still more were a few steps ahead of us in the risque Polariod picture taking game.
All of the following has been written several other places here.
Our local drug stores sometimes did their own developing which helped when Dollie knew some of the girls who enjoyed seeing our nudie photos. They loved developing and looking at our photos. I'm sure they also may have kept a few copies. We didn't care.
We were into topless and sometimes nudes of either of us. Nothing what we'd call porn. In fact until later we never took pornographic photos. We were into flashing and getting pictures with like minded strangers with Dollie or sometimes even me nude with a pretty naked female.
Seems like often even those local drug store labs sent many rolls of film out, I'd swear Florida, for processing. Rarely any skin photos came back. I always wondered what happened to the real pictures. We often got black or all white prints instead of the many pictures we spent hours taking. I'm sure most were just destroyed. I do remember occasional notes saying those photos just didn't come out.
A new small photo lab opened in town and Dollie became friends with the older owner and soon the horney young son who worked there. With me, his, and other encouragement I was now taking near porn photos with strangers doing hands-on photo poses with my wife. As I wrote before, the young pervert was caught selling women's photos to dirty magazines.
Something else, our first film cameras, 110 film I believe, had built in flashes. Those took a small flash bulb that had to be removed each time for another. Picture taking was slow and awkward yet in the 60's-70's. Lucky for me dad and his friend set me up with my own lab to process and develop B & W photos. This was when we did take some porn type pictures to swap and give away. Those would have qualified for old pics.
Somewhere during all of this flashing and taking pictures to prove it, I discoverd black and white Polaroid cameras. A whole new world for perverts eveywhere. Then came the small cheap color film Polaroids. Still when hiking nude or partially naked in the woods or along a beach, carrying a fairly large camera, a supply bag, and an extra 10-pack of film was not the greatest thing. Especially while sweating and covered with sunscreen.
Since joining OCC and looking at many other threads we are amazed how many others in our age group still have those old Polaroid pictures. Ours are all long gone for various reasons.

For a while before digital, but well after Polaroid, I ran a One Hour lab in Oklahoma. Being near a big university, we certainly did our share of nudes and porn. Of course, being the dirty old man I am, I never rejected any shots with skin showing. In fact, while scanning each shot on the roll, it was easy to see a lot of skin exposed, and that meant an extra print or two would be printed, and then sorted out during order breakdown. We all had our stash.

The real fun was in seeing the customers when they came in to pick the pictures up. Had one lady bring in a roll from a throw away 35mm camera. The shots were obliviously for a swinger publication or web use. I would have loved to have gotten to know the couple, but when she came in, she was rather nervous about the whole thing. I imagine that she realized that one (or more) of us had seen her totally naked. Another time a lady picked up a regular roll of film that were mainly 'happy snaps', but one nice shot of her totally naked looked great. After paying for the prints, she went and looked through them right in front of me, and must have not realized what was there. She giggled and blushed when she saw the picture. Then said how bad she looked, to which I commented that she had nothing to be ashamed of at all. She smiled and thanked me for the compliment...

The students gave us a never ending supply of pictures One girl who worked in the lab made it more fun too. She happily hopped in bed with anyone she liked, girl or guy... Helped keep the moral up!!!

I'm lovin the photo lab stories. Maybe someone should start a PHOTO LAB operators thread.
I remember when we found a few cameras while on vacations. Being in the boonies there was never a way to return them. We even figured maybe with the prints we'd get information. One camera at a fishing spot had pictures of fish, boats, and other fishy type things. Not the other fishy smelling stuff!.
But I do remember the 35mm camera with photos similar to our early tit and ass photos. Lucky the lab that did them was one of the more fun type labs with employees like those above. Still those pictures were nothing to get excited about. We felt badly because they were vacation type pictures with signs and things in the background.
I almost lost a camera at a large car show and swap meet. Mostly street rod pictures but always Dollie and other gals showing some skin. I left it on the nose of a trailer while we ate. Then walked off. After I got ready to take some pictures I panicked. Amazinly even though crowded the camera was still there.
The only time I really lost a camera was when I had to go to a hospital and let the valet park my truck. I'm not saying that he took it. But that camera with at least half intimate photos of Dollie was no longer in my truck or at home.
