Students protest against firing of faculty over porno thesis
About 600 Turkish students protested in front of Bilgi University in Istanbul on Monday over the university's decision to fire three faculty for allowing a student to film a porno as his graduation thesis. The students gathered at the university's Santral Campus in Istanbul's Eyup district demanding the return of the founder of the visual design department Professor Ihsan Derman and lecturers Ali Peskan and Ahmet Atif Akin. Protesting the university administration, students shouted slogans including "academic freedom," "this is a marketplace, not a university" and "freedom at Bilgi." The offending film's director, Deniz Ozguc, graduated from Bilgi University's Photography and Video Department last year, and the nature of his thesis project was revealed last week and caused nation-wide controversy. Upon not hearing any direct objections from the faculty, Ozguc shot the film at a studio on campus with fellow student Elif Safak Urucu as the star, in an attempt to "test the limits of academic freedom." Bilgi University immediately took action upon these revelations and fired the three faculty. Monday's protestors read a press release calling for an end to censorship, pointing out that the film is not pornography since it was not created for sale and by firing the three faculty the university had prevented discourse on this topic. They called for the administration to quit. Head of Bilgi University's Mathematics Department Professor Ali Nesin was at the protest supporting the students. "We'd settle for the administration running the university like a corporation, but they are running it like a market," he said. |
