I don’t know about other parts of the world, but here in the United States candid street photography is 100% legal. In public, people have no presumption of privacy regardless of their state of dress. That said, people can, and do, take umbrage whenever someone aims a camera in their direction. I’ve been the recipient of excoriating stares, rude gestures, vehement protests and one girl stuck out her tongue at me.

And I’ve been threatened with bodily harm. I shoot in only a handful of places where photo opportunities are prime. Quite often, I see the same homeless man in one of those places. The first time he noticed I was snapping photos of scantily clad young women on the street he yelled, (and I’m paraphrasing) “You better delete those or I’ll kick yer ass!” He didn’t look robust enough to kick the ass of a 90-year-old grandmother so I blew him off and kept walking.

On subsequent days I encountered him again. Repeatedly. Each time he verbally harassed me and I blew him off. Apparently he has appointed himself the moral authority of behavior on ‘his’ street. Then came the day he charged at me and got right in my face before harassing me with blistering invectives. His breath smelled of alcohol. I took a step backward and calmly informed him that candid street photography was legal and added, “On the other hand, harassment is a crime. If you keep harassing me I’ll have the cops on you so fast you won’t know what happened.” I wouldn’t have actually summoned the police. In my estimation the man is struggling with mental issues and his life is hard enough already. But my bluff worked; he never bothered me again.

Photos: On this occasion I was ‘busted’ but it ended without negative consequence. When I spied this co-ed from the front I guessed her shorts might be cheeky in the rear. After she and her male friend walked past I was able to shoot only a few of her backside before my autofocus went nuts and wouldn’t lock on. I wanted more shots to choose from so I was compelled to follow them at close range (less that 10 feet) with my camera held at butt level while shooting in fast burst mode. I employ this tactic occasionally but it’s risky, especially when my subject is accompanied by a male. You never know how he might react. I was almost ready to break off the chase when the girl looked over her shoulder and spied me. Busted! I took the nearest exit: I peeled off and cut through a parking lot.
