A dissertation on nude models might bring chuckles from some, but Clay Hipke said he’s serious about filling a void in sociology research.

“Academic types like myself like to research for the sake of research,” he said. “This is not going to cure cancer or anything like that.”

For his doctoral dissertation in sociology at UF, Hipke interviewed 25 women who appeared nude as artists’ models.

He found models were concerned about occupational hazards such as falling asleep and braving cool temperatures.

“It impressed me more than shocked me,” Hipke said.

His field of research is the sociology of deviance, so he doesn’t shock easy. He said his academic approach made his subjects more comfortable.

“I really clothed myself — there’s a pun — in the notion that I was very serious about this,” he said.

Funny thing is I've actually done this. It was for a local adult art class taught at the museum and they kept a logbook of about 50 models for the class.

You got paid $25 an hour non nude and $40 an hour nude (this was 1995 money) DUH so guess which one I picked? The embarrassment part was over in about 5 minutes and the rest of time you fought off dozing because that would irritated the hell out of the instructor.

Anyway I only saw maybe 3 other models because of the schedule and only one of them was female, and TRUST me you did not want to sit there and draw those 50 year old folds for hours on end

I was recently asked to model for a local arts group. When I got to
the studio, the instructor said that there would be two models, one
male and one female for the session. Since I had modeled for this
group before I was wearing a pair of very breif spandex underwear
like the last time I modeled for this group. The other model arrived
and changed into a long tight dress. The instructor said let's get
started. So she strips off the dress and gets on the platform
totally nude. He turned to me and asks if I want to pose nude too.
He said it's ok to leave my breifs on, in fact he did not intend the
class to have nude models. Hell... I thought, this is an art class so
I pulled off the breifs and got on the other platform. He had us
facing each other in a standing pose for the entire three hour class.

She was a very pretty woman in her early 30's who had been a dancer
at local mens clubs. She said she was used to working in the nude for
10 plus years and so nude modeling was no big deal. I have to admit
that I spent a lot of time looking her over. She was lovely. She said
she had two to three jobs a day. I could see why. She was a great
model and held her pose with little movement. I noticed that she did
have a very small patch of trimmed pubic hair and what seemed to be a
tatoo under her hair. I asked her about the tatoo at one of the
breaks and she said that she got it because it seemed to increase her
tips for dancing for the guys. She said she shaved everything off
while dancing and that increased her tips too.

I have never posed with a nude woman only five feet from me before. I
would have done the assignment for free!

My life drawing instructor years ago used to be adamant about having the models fully nude and having the class draw the genitals just as carefully as every other part of the body. A lot of kids when they are first faced with a nude model to draw are embarrassed to actually draw the penis, etc. So they leave that part of the drawing sort of blank or just loosely sketched in. That used to drive my instructor crazy.

My instructor was also female and hot - hot enough to be asked jokingly by classmates to pose.

Of course, she never did.
