Lack of toplessness on beaches

I went to three different beaches in France early June. When I was in the south of France in the 1990s I always encountered many topless women, and they were perfectly comfortable on the beach like that. Times have changed.

The good news is, that I saw topless women on all three beaches I visited. About half of the women wear bikinis, and I guess about 1 or 2% are sunbathing topless, mostly women over 40. Also the women over 40 in their bikinis, when they leave the beach they change in public, you might be able to see some bare breasts. They just change, not covering much. Young women come to the beach with their bikinis already under their clothes, and when they leave, they just put on a skirt and a shirt over their wet bathing suits.
I do not have a feeling that this behaviour comes from shame. Practically all young women wear bikinis with tops that cover the full breast, and really, really, small bikini bottoms. They do not bother at all, if you are looking, or even taking a picture. Also interesting is, that when you are in the city center, you see much more cleavage than you will see at the beach. It seems to be just a matter of following fashion.

And I believe that sunbathing with bare breasts, still feels liberating for a lot of women, also the young women. I noticed plenty of women in bathing suits, that loosen the straps of their swimsuits (not just the bikini tops, also the swimsuits) and pull down the swimsuits a bit, and then a bit more, so that you see breasts but just not (or almost) the nipple. I sat next to three – I think – Algerian young women with two fully covered (like in a burkini) and one with a bathing suit. The woman in the bathing suit pulled it down again and again, in a way that she was almost topless. The fully covered women did not seem to care. They were chatting with a lot of laughter. And they pulled up the coverage of their trouser so that their legs would get some sun. I also saw a different woman in burkini with next to her a friend in a really small bikini. Really small, also the top was very small.

In numbers, there are still less women sunbathing topless on a public then there were – even in 2005 for example. But to me it seems to be a matter of fashion. You hear about people discussing fear of being exposed on the internet, or harassed, or influence of Islam. I don’t believe any of that. Women are still comfortable being partly nude, and if more women in their proximity would get topless, they would probably follow suit. Now it is 1% or 2%. For social acceptance of toplessness I guess you would maybe need 15%, not even 20%. If the attention is not on one body, most women do not seem to mind.

I believe it’s not just beach culture that is influencing behaviour. In the 80s and 90s you would see topless women in TV series, advertising (in Europe). And later toplessness would be part of theatre, dance, etc. That trend has reversed. Now (social) media shows you to be exposed, but just not to be topless (no nipples). What you start to see now, is that you read more articles from influencers that it can be healthy to be topfree if you use enough suntan on the sensible spots. And that it should be women’s choice what they wear on the beach. I think if more influencers (women, not men) promote the idea of having freedom to be topless, for one or two years, beach culture might change towards more topless.

A long post perhaps, but my experience in the 90s, has shaped my interest to see topless women, and especially when they don’t mind and everything is casual. That you can read a book on the beach, just looking around a bit, and be happy with the sun, the sand and all those wonderful different breasts that you can see.

Just back from Balearic Islands (Ibiza and Menorca), still topless is very common but is going out of fashion a little. Most local young chicks have both pieces and didnt show tits, but was far common in older ones and foreing girls. Of course my friends removed hers tops on almost every beach and also removed bottons on less crowded ones. Its interest how in isolated beach topless is massive, but when get crowded go down. In this kind of beaches, groups of young girls came along... interesting seeing how they stayed with both pieces on until one of them started to sunbathe topless...most of the time sparked by seeing one of our girls doing the same...and spreading to her friends as they see no one was harmed...

We just came back from a week on Formentera and that's probably still topless paradise.
Most memorable was a day at Calo des Morts (google for images of the beach). It's a very small beach and we arrived early as our hotel was very close. Great spot in the shade where we could easily spend all day.
First came the the local "older" (35-40) women who went topless without thinking twice about it. But a bit later the instagram-crowd started coming in. Specifically 2 groups of 4 girls, all between 20 and 25.
By the time they arrived, the beach was already pretty full, so they couldn't place their towels together anymore. So they split up a bit.
One of the girls was placing her towel right in front of us, and she had a little nipslip when taking here clothes off. Considering they were Italian (where topless is much less common), I didn't think anything more would happen.

After a while the group of friends went into the water, but the girl in front of me stayed tanning. After a few minutes she decided to remove her top, but the other girls didn't notice. When they came out of the water, it took one of them a while to notice, she shrugged her shoulders and removed her top as well. The 2 others followed shortly after.

In the second group of 4, there was 1 girl who didn't even pack a top. The others all had their bikini already on.
However, when I was in the water, one of them was adjusting her bikini so she wouldn't have tanlines on her shoulders. The bikini kept falling down, and she would constantly flash the entire beach. She didn't seem to mind though (after a while, she just put sunlotion on with here bikini still on, but the both triangles just hanging down and her boobs out). I thought this was very peculiar as why would you not go topless if you don't care about people seeing your boobs. However, this was the queue for the other 2 girls to remove their tops as well. I assume the first one was the "wild one" of the group, and the others first needed to build confidence.

This meant I had 7 young girls and 3 older girls on a beach that maybe fits 40 people. This caused a chain reaction and everyone that entered the beach afterwards, immediatly removed their top. At the end I think about 90-95% of the women were topless or either changed just in public.

Being on holiday this week has reminded me of this thread for obvious reasons and I thought I'd share with you the state of play as it happens day to day. So I'm in Tenerife in late August staying in Las Americas. We're in a budget friendly hotel that has turned out to be very nice and clean if that means anything for what happens poolside. It was one particular minor incident that I saw that sparked the memory of this thread and indeed the memory of seeing someone without at top at a hotel pool. It's got to have been 20 years ago that I saw it on a regular basis. We stopped the beach holidays around 2009, had kids, did the Disney stuff and resurfaced on a beach holiday in 2022 to a very different scene.

I'm under no illusion that it is anywhere near what I witnessed in the 90s & 00s but I feel it's still there and just needing a spark. Someone told everyone to wear think bikini bottoms they can say it's just fine to take your top off

So if I get chance here's a daily update if what's to be seen whilst it's still fresh in my mind. Here goes...

Tenerife Day 1:

Sat by the pool. 90% sunloungers have towels on but it's only 50% occupied. Not many kids about and no slides, my kids have been told they cart use their inflatables in the water too. Now I'm not expecting to see anything as per any other hotel pool. Maybe at a push a set of straps undone whilst they are sunbathing on their front. So it came as quite a surprise to have my attention caught by a man and his possible older Son come up the steps from the lower level pool to put upper pool. My gaze moved to the woman he was talking to who I assumed to be his wife and the other guys mum. I'd seen her earlier as I had walked to the pool bar. She was about 40 years old and quite slim for her age wearing a black strapless bikini top and black normal brief bikini bottoms. But this time I could see a severe amount of side boob and a bare back, she was topless. Well fancy that I thought. Sunglasses were already on and the book page didn't turn for a while. I watched and she chatted away to these two with her back to me sat side on on her sunlounger. I was hoping for a half turn or her laying back in the lounger but it want to be. As he husband took his shirt off and sat on the lounger she reached for her top and put it on. I was lucky enough to see her lower her body as she bent forward and her left nipple came in to view from behind/below. Not bad I'll take that. Everyone else on the other side of the pool would have got a full view so I thought I'll bide my time, she'll be back, she has my attention now.
Not long late she returned with ice creams for them all. Her son disappeared from the pool and she moved loungers with her husband to two that were on the pools edge. I noticed she was part of a larger group of families/friends and she spoke with a northern Irish accent. Bonus I thought. Always better when they aren't local as it's just normal to them. Nice to see some one from our way doing it. Also the group aspect intrigued me. Not shy in front of friends or family. Anyway I continued looking over as the afternoon went on and after a while she turned on to her front and unclipped her bikini top. A bit of fidgeting to get a comfy spot yealded some more side boob. She slept for a bit and then got up turned quickly to be sat like she was before on the side of the lounger. Her bare breasts facing the other half of the pool. She reached for her top, covered herself, fastened it and she went again to the bar. After she returned she sat up for a bit snoozing. Her top stayed on. Then she flipped over to her front again and her top was unclipped straight away. She slept for a bit again before turning on to her back. I thought this is the now or never moment. She had been fully topless before. The sun was fully beaming down after a bit of cloud cover, here we go... But no she grabbed her top in the movement of turning over and left it balanced over her breasts. Unbelievable I thought. I was beginning to give up hope but then my luck turned. She sat up with her arm across the unclipped bikini top she moved her hands so that they had an end of a clasp each. Typically after exposing herself willingly twice whilst putting her top back on she wasn't that care free when finally facing in my direction. I realised though that she was struggling to fasten it. After a few seconds longer than she should with her hands behind her back she pulled one side of the back strap out to check the position, then the other, then the 1st one again. Then she pulled it off her breasts completely, for probably only 3 seconds I had an a clear view of her tanned, pert tits. She then had a quick look at the clasps and tried to fasten it again. It still didn't fasten. So she walked, arm over unfastened bikini top over breasts, to her husband who fastened it for her. The show was over. But after seeing nothing round a pool for so long it's maybe given me some hope that all is not lost. A completely low key moment. But it ticked a lot of the thrill factors for me.

Currently on French Atlantic coast, with children. That last part means, unfortuanatly, wife keeps her top on! I'm making sure I head to a nude beach in catalonia in August next year with only my wife, no kids, so hundreds of men get to see my wife's tits! (let's hope a few reading this post? :-) ).
Considering the term "French sunbathing" is repeatedly used by my wife's male friend to repeatedly remind me he's seen my wife's tits on a holiday before I was dating her (back in 2002), it's upsetting that the French women seem to have fallen out of favour with getting brown boobs. That said, I have at the beach seen 14 pairs of French tits 's far this week. All I woukd say late 40s to 60s. All beautifully chic French women. Some with grey hair, but looking nonchalantly hot as they whipped of their bras or rolled down their one piece swimwear. I expect to see a few more today when we go paddleboarding and hope to hit the 20 mark of set of boobs.
The upsetting thing however is that the millennial crowd have clearly given up on showing their tits off at the beach. And even more so in front of their children and friends. Within a generation toplessness at general European beaches will be a thing of the past because of millennial body insecurities and smart phones. I'm hoping nude beaches will remain as they are so I can see every woman's tits, and every man can see my wife's, who decides the nude beach is the place for them.

As a few people have said, it seems to be a common trend everywhere.
In Australia, topless was just a norm as i was growing up and my younger adult life. It was rare to go the beach and not go topless or see topless.
But in the last 10 years, maybe longer, its died off. Now its rare to see any, unless its a nude beach.
Nude beaches are also dropping off, with local authirities closing them down.
A sign of the times.
