There WAS a period in the 1980's when stockings and garter belts made a comeback. Maybe your average high school cheerleader wasn't wearing them, but a lot of women were...at least briefly.

If we really wanted to split hairs, most any scene showing a cheerleader getting her skirt ripped off to show her panties usually isn't realistic, since cheerleaders are almost always wearing spanks or a bodysuit that actually covers their panties (so they don't have a real EUF moment when doing some of the more acrobatic moves where their skirts flip up).

I don't know if that has always been the case, especially when cheerleaders wore much longer skirts and weren't doing as much gymnast type stuff on the field. Someone more knowledgeable about the history of cheerleading would probably know when spanks became a normal part of the uniform.

I have an insight/experience to share that's related-- and I remember it so clearly, especially in light of what happened.

In 1990, we didn't have the internet. If you were a fan of pantyhose and heels, of shapely nyloned leg and ass back then, you eagerly looked forward to the monthly release of the magazine "Leg Show". Now the pictorials often had girls in garter belts/stockings, but there was just as much emphasis on pantyhose. There was also Pamela Peterson's "Pantyhose Parade" and her photo sets, but that's another story.

I remember reading the letters from viewers that they published, and there were always these old timers from the 50's and 60's asking for more girdles and garter belts, saying it was so much sexier and bemoaning the fact that time had passed this era by with the advent of pantyhose.

I remember clear as day reading this and laughing, thinking that pantyhose had indeed past these guys by, and a whole new generation had grown up with girls wearing hose. That's just the way it was I thought smugly.

Then it hit me. If time had passed these guys by, wouldn't it do the same for my generation? this was 1990, and pantyhose had been on the market for over 25 years by then... nah, I told myself, women have worn hosiery for the last 400 plus years...longer...so what's going to replace pantyhose anytime soon?

At the time, pantyhose seemed to be rock solid. All women wore them regularly. Little did I know that time frame was the start of a long down slide. First, nude and flesh color hose fell out out of fashion. By 1995 or so, black hose was the only hose being worn by younger woman. By the late 1990's, the bare leg had arrived...talk about a drought...

Just goes to show that nothing is forever and some things that you consider a given can just fade away...

That's the way it's been as far back as I can remember. I think they used to just call them "uniform briefs", and they were worn over the girl's actual underwear. When I was in high school, the cheerleaders wore loose legged shorts during their after school practices, and that's when you got the REAL panty show.

I would probably say mid to late 1960's-- that's when cheerleader skirts started getting progressively shorter. It's interesting, though-- because some people still consider them panties even though they know better. Like the "Star Trek" mini dresses from TOS-- the women wore spanks or bloomers but to this day many people view them as panties.

Or consider the Japanese PE schoolgirl uniform-- that was the norm until the mid 1990's. Supposedly, many girls hated them because they were so tight and revealing-- because the spanks were worn by themselves-- no skirt and in a variety of colors. They said it was like running around in just their panties-- guys loved it...

The porn of the current generation is made by guys from the previous generation. It's always about twenty or thirty years out of date. The guys who were filming in the '60's, 70's and 80's grew up in the 30's, 40's and 50's. I knew a lot of those old guys. The sexiest thing in the world to them was a woman's legs in a pair of silk stockings. Particularly, the reinforced areas of the toe and heel, the garter straps and the stocking tops...especially the stocking tops. Here's an example. That's true enough. In my view, no other culture does Fetish better then the Japanese. Part of it is their porn laws...because of what they can show, they focus on other aspects like foreplay and fetish play/clothing before getting in to the main action. They also do pantyhose fetish better than anyone else. Also stuff like invisibility, tentacles, walking around without skirts, sharking-- stuff you just don't see in American porn which is all about the money shot and getting down to business, My opinion, anyway.
