sorry for starting another discussion about that matter.
as Fango explainded the main issue for removing the open-directories-threads was there were personal documents containing identifying information at these links, as well as other questionable content. that is pretty true in case of the ftp links. as far as i remember this is not the problem with the http links. so i propose to revive the "only-http"-thread. would be nice, thanks in advance |

This was also the problem with most of the http links, especially the "free.fr" ones. People use those servers as data storage and are oblivious to the fact that everybody can access them. I've seen many personal things both in http and ftp directories.
But really to me it is more a case of people not protecting their stuff well enough. They put their files in a way that is freely accessible for anyone with an internet connection. They should protect their stuff, if they don't, it's their fault, not ours. But anyway my point is, ftp, http, same deal or no deal. I feel like there have been a war lead by people who were too technologically illiterate to use ftp, and they tried to bring it down ever since. They even tried creating their own failed little threads to watch the same old pictures that have been around since 2003. And now we have this "hey, mods say http only guys !" Well if that's so then there's no point creating a new thread because we've seen them all. twice. |

There's no need for a proposal like this. As already explained in the other thread, content from these links is still allowed to be posted here. Just the links are not allowed to be posted. Yes, this means more work for the people who would have normally found and posted just the links, in that they would now have to download and upload anything they want to post, but it prevents access to the personal documents and other questionable content that caused the directory threads to be removed.

The guidance given above is welcomed, but an observation about this site which does help to draw attention to the outside world is the fact that the forum can be accessed without being logged in, this also meaning search engines are also able to trawl the forum.
Coming up high in a search engine result is a good thing in some respects, but can also be not so good. Is it technically possible with the vB software, or desirable to lock out certain parts of the forum except to logged in users? Thanks FT. |

Hiya - With the improvements in Google image searches (for example) even photos can be used to personally identify people. So I dont thoroughly believe that using a distinction between for example a .doc Resume (containing full names, addresses, phone numbers etc), and content (meaning "barebum photos") as the reason for compelling the mods to remove the threads.
Its more likely that the victims of our crimes are just really peeved at having their privacy violated and scattered all over the internet (that includes the barebum-photos too... not just the "personal documents") and they're probably making some legal threats. The OCC mods have thus chosen the correct response to those complaints because as much as it hurts us to say goodbye to those threads, it would be even more painful to lose an entire website just because of two threads. So lets just leave it at: it was GREAT while it lasted, but its time to move on. PS: I'd still love to know how the posters got to those wins. Even once you get a link thats active, you'd still need to sift through Terabytes of jpegs before you pick up any content. That takes time and bandwidth - I havent sufficient of either. But even if you're uncapped, did you guys still spend all that time downloading stuff with only a <1% chance of getting content? Or is there a quicker way? |

Its up to us what we post in here. By the rules of the forum ofcourse. We dont break any rules. They just shared it with there own permission. Knowing it or not. So Fahter has a point. All search engines are to close to home them. I think a bit of common sence about posting is in order.
