I have a good friend who worked at a photo lab. This was back in the day before 10 minute photos, etc. You had to send your exposed film out to a company for developing if you weren't able to do it yourself. He said when a roll of explicit photos came in, they would automatically print 5 copies. 1 for the binder, one for the manager of the store, one for the customer, one for the guy developing the photos and one for a spare. This was a high volume lab, and they had binders and binders full of explicit photos. Who knows where these binders are now.

My ex used to work next door to a 1-hour photo place. She would get her film developed there all the time and knew the guy behind the counter fairly well. One time I had her develop a roll for me. When she brought it home, I showed her one of the pictures from the roll (below). She had thought I was taking it with the digital, but I swapped when she was distracted and took it with the film camera

She was very embarrassed knowing that the guy next door to her work had seen her like this!

I’m sure this is a common story and I’m sure there are PLENTY of photos out there that we have long since forgotten about! 

Very common I'm sure. A friend who used to work in a photo lab described a wall in the back room dedicated to 'confiscated' pics.

Having managed a one hour lab for a large chain, our general policy was that we could print nudes as long as the people in the photo were not touching each other, that could mean holding hands, if they were touching then we could not print the negative.

taking extra photos of customers work was grounds for termination and you had legal ramifications also for the company and the individuals involved, you have to remember that the images belong to the photographer not the people in the picture and for sure not the photofinnishing company.
