On any summer weekend, you can catch the packed Seastreak ferry from either Brooklyn, or lower Manhattan to the Sandy Hook beaches in New Jersey, including the famous clothing optional Gunnison Beach. The boat is always loaded with New Yorkers headed for a fully nude day in both public and the sun. It doesn't get much more "nude friendly" than that.

There are a lot of factors at play, but the key ingredients seem to be a) a progressive, tolerant populous, b) a progressive, tolerant city administration, c) a local tradition of alternative influences stretching the boundaries, d) an inherent empathy with the three main causes (body/artistic freedom, greener cities, cycle safety), and perhaps e) lack of a vocal, motivated, influential opposition.

New York scores on some of these but not so much on others. There are bohemians (as in most cities) but they don't really have any power or influence. And there are some very conservative, traditionalist elements, who have lots.

Apparently they had a good turnout of riders (at least 500), and lots of photographers around too. But it looks like very few pics are actually being uploaded this year
