In Windows Media Player you can temporarily change the video settings to brighten, darken, or change hue colors. I have WMP 10.

Open an video. Click View, Enhancements, Show Enhancements. (There is also a shortcut Icon below the Now Playing tab.) This opens a Video Settings panel below the video window. You can slide a brightness bar. When you close the video it resets to the original settings, and there is no way I know with the basic player to save the changes to the video.

Sometimes it will make a low res video flicker a bit, but it usually works great to add light to those good bits that tend to get hidden in shadow. :-)

Enjoy
