Origin of “FWB”?

I’m 65, have been with my wife since 1985. During my free times (fall 1977 through summer 1985), I plowed my way through a wide swath of women. As relationships cooled off, we might still get together for sex even if we were seeing other people. We called it an “open relationship”. At some point, that term was replaced with “friends with benefits”, and I admit I’ve used the term FWB on these pages.

My question is - when was it coined?

Wikipedia says:
The earliest known use of the term is documented in Alanis Morissette's 1995 song "Head over Feet" in the lyric "you're my best friend, best friend with benefits".

Later, of course the Film made this expression popular.

Back in the day (80's) we called it a "Fuck Buddy" someone we could call when we needed to just have sex with minimal strings attached when we did not have a BF or GF.

I do see a difference.
- ONS, you fuck once and move on.
- Fuck buddy, you fuck when you want, but that is it.
- FWB you are friends, which is a similarly close relationship as family members have. But those normally don't fuck. You then risk the relationship by fucking.
- You're a couple. Hopefully you still fuck, but expectations are much higher than FWB.
Usually, FWB is not monogamous, couples are.

Yeah...my experience with "FWB" has not been a very good one.

I had become very good friends with a beautiful young lady some years ago. We were both single at the time and hung out all the time. One night we went out, got drunk...and started making out. We ended up back at her place and had all kinds of sex. After that, we started routinely fucking. We were friends with benefits. The sex happened after we'd already been friends.
The problem was that I started developing feelings. She did not. I was squarely in the "friend zone." We had a few arguments; and she ultimately decided to end the friendship. We actually do keep in contact from time to time - and we're both married; but to me it's very bittersweet.

Invariably one of the parties will start developing feelings; and that's when you run into trouble. Unless both parties happen to be on the same page.

I'm now in my 60s and I have been with my wife since the late 90s. Although I wasn't aware of either term, I was in a FWB situation a couple of times, first in my mid 20s and then in my early 30s. In both cases we had been dating for a few months, split up and then bumped into each other again a while after that. The first time I had been invited to a works do and had no one to take, so I invited her and we wound up having better sex than when we were officially together. For the next 18 months we were each other's 'plus one' and occasionally hooked up just for fun, probably every 2-3 weeks. Eventually I moved away for work, and that was that. A similar thing happened with another woman a few years later; I ended things, but we crossed paths a few weeks later and she had been invited to a friend's wedding, and that led to another year or so of enjoyable no strings fun until she moved to the other side of the world.

In between those two I had a fuck buddy for a while. Again, we met through work and one Saturday morning I woke up at her place with a hangover and vague memories of a very enjoyable fuck. We had a more sober session before she booted me out at lunchtime, looking like I had been on the lash with Shane McGowan but feeling pretty good. We carried on like that for several months, with no pretence of it being anything other than no strings screwing.

In all 3 cases there was an unspoken 'don't ask, don't tell' policy about what we got up to the rest of the time, but I don't think we would have called it an open relationship. Funnily enough, it's the fuck buddy who I remember most fondly.

Many years ago when much younger in the early 80s.
Going out to the clubs close to home you got to know girls that liked to fuck when drunk with no strings, but were very discrete about it.

She became my fuck buddy for the term was just starting to take hold in conversations.

I called her and yet to meet her face to face, she invited me to her place. She asked if I could bring some pot.
Went over to her place smoked and talked.
We started kissing she asked me to stand up, she undid my pants and pulled down my under ware. She started sucking me and it all went from there.

That was the first time I met a complete stranger and after maybe an hour got sucked letting me know she wanted to fuck.
It was great no head games like a potential relationship. The fling or FWB lasted around two months usually during the week or a Sunday afternoon.

It was a wonderful time in my life my first official FWB.

My FWB was my best mates mum and then I dated her daughter and the fact that the mum was there after we divorced still willing to fuck was the only way I got through the divorce.
