I haven't been to the full moon party for more than 10, maybe 20 years, but when I went it was:
When is it held - It is held monthly, on the full moon Where: on an island off the coast of southern thailand, in the south china sea, called Koh Phangang What: perhaps some background is in order. Bangkok, Bali, and Kathmandu, are the 3 big melting pots of east meets west in Asia - a bit like the Mos Eisly space port in the 1977 Star Wars movie. If you are overlanding it (which not many do nowadays) from Sydney to London, everyone stops in one of those 3 places for some months, and those places are places you can get a pizza, scrambled eggs, a beer, read menu's in english, and connect with fellow travellers )a bit like the Bree Inn in The Lord of the Rings (the book, not the movie). When I was there, people were always searching for more remote, and private places. Phuket took off on Thailand in the 1970's, and it now has high rise buildings, and and international airport, so travellers sought a new place (i.e somewhere cheaper). Phuket is on the western side of Thailand (adaman Sea), and cheaper and more beautiful islands could be found on the eastern side (South China Sea). The Leonardo Di Caprio movie "The Beach" was set on Koh Phi Phi island, just near Phuket, but was actually based on a book of the same name, which was set on the island of Koh Sumui (which is on the eastern side of Thailand) Koh Sumui was where travellers went to get away from it all. When I was there, on Koh Sumui, it was becoming very popular, and the "new" place to go to was an island called Koh Phanggang. It had no electricity, no roads, no Police, no hospital, etc - just white sand that makes a sqeaky sound between your toes when you look at it, warm blue water, and literally single room bungalows on the beach front for about AUD$5 a day. I think beer was AUD$0.50 a bottle when I was there, maybe AUD$1. You could eat out at a restaraunt for 3 meals a day, drink a few beers in the evening, and pay for your accommodation for maybe AUD$50 a week. But, there was no police, no electricity (just generators at the hotels etc), no roads, etc. When I was there, Koh Phangan was full of foxy looking germans, israeli's, french, Australians, NZ, Dutch, and a few other nationalities. Every day was like Christmas day (Australian Christmas, not USA or Eur0pean - i.e. hot, hot, hot) and all the evenings were like new years eve. I could type more, but this is too long already. When I went to a full moon party, travellers from all over Asia would descend on the place. And it was like the best new years eve party I had been to, except better. |
