Default Q: How many people have fserves? (HC) Hot chick!

How many people here fserve on irc, or have their own ftps?

The reason I ask is 'cause I've been toying with the idea of somehow getting together a huge database of all amateur pics (and possible vids, but that's ALOT of space to worry about) that people can find. The idea I like most about it is having a visual directory so you know what the series content is - DSC5532_1.JPG doesn't really say much about the series, does it!?! Also, another thing that is great about having a 'visual database' is that people can see the pics and tell if they have fills or not.

Now we all know the bad parts - once word gets out it ALWAYS gets out to the wrong people, before you know it they've got bots sucking down the whole website a zillion times. (Now I'm all for the Lurk... the 'little guy'..., so I wouldn't care about people DL with contributing). Where to host it, how to host it, should it be hosted? All these questions!

Just wondering what people have, what their experiences have been, etc.. (I've hosted both fserves and ftps, just not for extended periods of time).

Anyways, for the rest of you who don't care about reading here's some eye candy!

god damn nice post and I have hosted both fservs and ftps before used to for about 2 years but that was about 3 years ago before I got intro trouble... long story that I dont need to get into. It seems like a great idea but costs could come into play I would love to have an amateur database but ya i dont know where I am going with this so I will just say if anyone can think of an idea to get it done cheaply or would be willing to have a dedicated host for it, it could work

Speaking as someone who rents a server I can only tell you that the terms "huge database" and "cheap" don't go hand in hand and I am sure others such as Alex will attest to this as well. The very reason I run a private site is because if I were to make the it public I would not be able to afford to run it for more then 1 month out of the year and it would not really be worth it but if you are commited to the idea then I suggest you got to http://webhostingtalk.com and ask some of the people over there where you could get the best deal because most of the members there run their own servers and thus very knowledgeable about this topic and good luck.

OK, just a random though before I head to work...

Hosting an ftp a few days a week is fairly cheap if you have cable. Automation of computer tasks is possible as well. So, what if there was a little 'network' of places (fts/sites/etc) that a bunch of people host, with all the same content that gets uploaded/shared at regular intervals? Sounds complicated, but it's kinda simple really... I 'mini-internet'. If one person goes offline, there's a few other sites you can go to.

Bah, too confusing, haven't had a tea yet.

Places like walla.com (and Gmail if they ever get their asses in gear!) have storage of 1GB for the email. Using these services can allow people to temporarily store and transfer gigantic amounts of pictures to each other, enabling a larger number of people to have 'giant collections'. From there, it's just a matter finding a way to 'host' them for the 'little' guys who don't have the ability to host the database for others.

Now this 'system' isn't for everyone.. there's some people out there who pride themselves with their collections and revel in knowing that they have 'the largest' or 'best content', etc. My 'idea' is more of a socialist view... try to give as much as possible in hopes that others may give, so that everyone can have an equal (or close to an equal) collection. Onces people have 'the basics', it's alot easier to collect new pics.
(If people are weary of socialist or communist views, lighten up I say. It's just the internet! lol)

Anyways, thats some mindless rambling from me.! lol

You can host on a Mac using MySQL. Then it all depends on how much HD space you have.
