anybody know of an easy way to recover a hardrive memory

yeah so my other laptop crashed a few days back and i was wanting to recover the data from before i tried to repair it. Does anyone on here know of a way to do this that does not require a lot of money or technicians?

Probably be able to recover the data if it is a slave drive to another disk that is still working and has windows on it - maybe get a lead to connect it via the usb to a working computer?

Maybe try booting from your windows CD and seeing if you can reinstall windows - the other Data will still be there unless you re-format the disk.

If the disk seems totally broke, hold on to it - amazing how these things can become usable again after a long period - maybe it's static or something. I had a laptop that exipred then came back up after 10 years!!

the easy that i know is extract your hd of 2.5 inch from your laptop put on case for Hd (2.5 inch) and hope that Hd working again , connect with usb to a working pc and dowload on it all your data !

even if you formatted your laptop, you can still retrieved about 90% of the data.
you would need to remove the drive and connect to another pc, and run a program like file scavanger. there is free programs knocking about. just do a google search.

If the laptop crashed but the HD did not fail (i.e. there is nothing physically wrong with the HD) then you can pull the HD, plug it into a USB drive and load it from another PC, but here is the kicker, you have to take ownership of the file folders (windows only) in order to access you data from another OS. The files on your C drive are protected by the system and you will get access denied unless you take ownership of the files.

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:
(windows)
1) Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.

2) Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

3) In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

4) Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:
"You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?"
Click Yes then Click OK

May not be of any use to you by now, but others may find this handy. Do a google search for TestDisk. Should be free software. Very easy to install and use. I still have an older version installed on my PC. v6.10, I believe is what I have. Works well, and works fast.

Ironically enough, my OS WD HD failed last weekend but total death click failure...if you hear your hard drive clicking and it is still on and working, backup anything you can as fast as you can because one or maybe two more boots later and your drive is with the gods. Freezing can work but didn't for me and since I don't have a clean room and the same make/model hard drive to replace the components it is ddddead. sucker was less than 6 years old...wish they made hard drives like they used to make telephones...

it's good to download free ubuntu for emergencies. my computer wouldn't start. so i stuck the ubuntu disk in and i could see all of my folders. problem was i only had one dvd recorder. you can't take stuff off with the dvd if ubuntu is already in it. if you have 2 dvd's you can remove files with the second dvd. in my case i installed ubuntu into a small partition it made during installation. i was then able to remove the ubuntu disk and remove all of my files on dvd's. it works.

second, don't assume you know about hard drive warranties. go to the manufacturers web site and check your hard drive serial number to see if it still in warranty. find out one way or the other officially. if it is, most manufacturers will exchange it for another refurbished one. yours is used so you are not going to get a free new one. over the years i've got a few good hard drives this way. they send you an rma to ship yours back free of charge and they send you one.
