Fascination.... Nostalgic, old-fashion, abandoned areas good place to play alone without interference, while still a chance to get caught, and that's more likely by bums, or young adults (less trouble)
Railroad tracks are photogenic. They give a nice sense of depth to the image. But it's still a bad idea and something that is being discouraged by the railroads. I've got a friend who works with railroad safety and people still die walking the tracks or taking pictures with some regularity. And it's incredibly traumatic for the engineer when it happens.
