I read an article in the internet (sorry, I don't remember my browsing) where the author explains the sitting position. It has more to do with keeping a guard against animals going by the area. There was a video in the Travel channel about the Zo'e Indians, and the women sit in whatever position is comfortable for them. Maybe it's a custom with the Xingu tribes?
