An alternative etymology has it coming from the French 'chas', meaning the hole of a needle (the resemblance is obvious). As this word is very close to 'chat' (cat), it evolved to 'chat' and its feminine form 'chatte' ('female cat', still in use in French today), which gives 'pussy' when translated in English.
