They were removed a while back because too many people were abusing them, intentionally downgrading threads. I always found them irrelevant and redundant anyway. The thanks you get, both through clicks of the "Thanks" button and written replies, is a much more accurate indicator of the quality/success of a thread, and a much of better way of showing/receiving appreciation for a thread. At least I think so.
