This would seem to be clear instruction for the faithful, but the increase in the popularity of Tattoos and piercings have caused some to dismiss this teaching (if they knew it at all). I think tattooing is still pretty much verboten among the Jewish race and faith, but not being Jewish myself, I can not confirm it.

Maybe some of our poster can help. What are outward visible signs that someone is Jewish? I'd think that blond or red hair might be unlikely on a Jewess, as it seems that most from that region of the world have darker hair. With a couple thousand years of intermingling of races it could be possible though.
You are correct; tattoos that are permanent are forbidden by Jewish law, although there is no penalty. Additionally the practice is frowned upon because it is a reminder of the numbers that were tattooed by the Nazis upon the victims of the Holocaust.

As far as physical appearances are concerned, there are certain stereotypical features (hooked nose, for example) that some people look for. However, nowadays Jews can be redheaded, blond, light skinned, or black. No way that I know of to tell for sure.
