I had a similar thought earlier this week when i saw how much improved were the ride pics from NYC this year.
But will NYC's ride ever be huge? I am not sure, nor am I sure that it really matters because the internet gives you instant exposure no matter where you live. Anyway, but those "attractive, liberal minded artistic young people" are already riding in places like Portland, etc. They make up a healthy percentage of the riders here. So, yeah, their infuence is very strong outside of NYC. BTW - they also make up probably most of the naked blue people at Renn Fayre. But as for the city itself - its never really been a very friendly place for bicyclists, and the really huge rides are held at night too. So my guess would be the idea will continue to get exported elsewhere rather than get played out on the streets of New York.
