I'm not sure why someone would bother to fake that, but I think what you're referring to is the grainy/faded background compared to the foreground; assuming a roughly constant level of atmospheric moisture and other shit, "weathering" of an image is nearly exponential with distance, so if the furthest foreground object is 10-20 m away, then the valley is a couple klicks, I'd expect a fairly sharp dividing line...
