To make it worse, I clicked send on this post, with the upload running in the background. Then this thread posted. Then the upload completed, but the file is not attached to it. So if I had waited one more minute it would be there. Is the file now on the server somewhere, not attached to a posting? Who knows.

I've done that once or twice(accidentally) and what i did was click the Back button and then the Forward button and the files appeared.
Yeah as a general rule you should leave your uploading browser alone until the upload has completed
With the amount of money you've spent, you certainty have some issues that seriously need to be looked into.
If that can't be rectified, i guess just be patient with what you have.
There's no percentage of progress shown, but there is a green progress bar. If it doesn't move(as it normally doesn't for me), down the bottom click on the Attachment Key 'down arrow' once or twice. see below
